It’s almost unbelievable, but next Saturday, March 9th,<\/strong> Ino and I are returning to Sumba<\/strong>.<\/h4>\nWe’ll be taking nearly three tons<\/strong> of supplies with us once again in the Truck n’Load<\/a>. Three tons<\/a>! It sounds like we’re embarking on a mission to colonize Mars<\/strong> rather than just setting off down seemingly endless roads<\/strong> in our supply-laden truck.<\/p>\nThis mission goes beyond merely delivering supplies<\/strong>; it is about sustaining our existing achievements, initiating new programs<\/a>, building infrastructure<\/a>, and inviting more people to join this remarkable journey. We are privileged to host John Kevan<\/strong> from Rotary International<\/a> on Sumba Island from March 16th to 21st,<\/strong> where he will experience firsthand the impact of the SolarBuddy program<\/a> alongside our water and medical initiatives.<\/p>\nWe will also have volunteers<\/a> with us, contributing their time and effort to create a meaningful impact. The Kawan Sehat health agents<\/a> are set to undergo training to enhance healthcare in the most remote villages.<\/p>\nAdditionally, our latest series of awareness posters<\/a> addressing smoking<\/a>, alcohol abuse, and waste management<\/a> is ready to be distributed across schools in East Sumba as part of our health prevention campaigns<\/a>\u2014delivering crucial education to the younger generation.<\/p>\nSo, what are we bringing this time? Buckle up:<\/h4>\n\n- Our friend Marc<\/strong> from Smart Energy Tech<\/a> generously donated sixteen solar panels.<\/strong><\/li>\n
- Three hundred<\/strong> twenty long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets\u2014that’s 650 kilos<\/strong> of protection against mosquito bites (see article<\/a>).<\/em><\/li>\n
- A mountain of medicines<\/strong>, because thousands rely on them for survival, especially within the Primary Medical Care<\/a> program.<\/li>\n
- Medical equipment<\/strong>\u2014stethoscopes, bandages, supplies for the Truck of Life<\/a>, plus spare parts.<\/li>\n
- We brought pumps and a 1,000-liter water tank<\/strong> because water is still a daily struggle in Sumba. People don’t have access to it, so we bring it. A thousand liters is a start.<\/li>\n
- Steel shelves<\/strong> to store 2,224 SolarBuddy<\/a> lamps and medical supplies.<\/li>\n
- Clothing, and over a dozen boxes<\/strong> filled with donations for children and adults from all over.<\/li>\n
- Recycling bins!<\/strong> Yes, we’re stepping up waste management<\/a> at Rumah Kambera.<\/a> We’re not just here to treat people\u2014we’re here to build something better, something sustainable (see article<\/a>).<\/em><\/li>\n
- And everything else:<\/strong> food, vitamins, essential nutrients, personal items, and, of course, everything we need to share our journey with you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

The Road Ahead<\/h4>\n
But before we even reach Sumba, we’ll need patience\u2014first, 18 hours<\/strong> of overnight driving to Surabaya<\/a>, then a long wait at Tanjung Perak port.<\/a> Crossing East Java<\/a> from Banyuwangi<\/a> is an adventure in itself. Then, a three-day ferry journey with stops in Lombok<\/a> before finally reaching Waingapu<\/a>, Sumba. From there, it’s off to Rumah Kambera<\/a>, our socio-medical base camp.<\/strong> We make this trip 3 to 4 times a year<\/strong>, sometimes with the Truck of Lif<\/a>e, but we’re using the Truck N’ Load<\/a> this time.<\/p>\nAnd After That?<\/h4>\n
A whole new adventure begins. There’s work to do, a packed schedule, and massive challenges ahead:<\/strong><\/p>\nBuilding a new storage facility<\/a>\u2014a critical space for medical supplies and 2,224 SolarBuddy<\/a> lamps that will bring light to thousands of children<\/strong> without electricity. Constructing seven ferrocement water reservoirs<\/a> (5,000 liters each)<\/em> will finally provide clean water to all the villages in the Mbatakapidu region<\/a>. Coordinating our biggest water project yet<\/strong>\u2014a 110 m\u00b3 water reservoir<\/a> with a rainwater collection system. Yes, 110 m\u00b3!<\/strong> This building<\/a> is a “premi\u00e8re”<\/em> for Fair Future\u2014a massive regional project without water<\/strong>, roads<\/strong>, or electricity<\/strong>. An even more significant challenge is<\/b> the study of malaria on a large scale.<\/a> For a month, we will concentrate our efforts on Umalulu<\/a>, a region where malaria is endemic<\/strong> and therefore ever-present. Four hundred houses<\/strong> are scattered over twenty kilometres, home to nine hundred ultra-rural inhabitants who live in extreme poverty<\/strong>. It is a village without<\/strong> roads<\/strong> and access to healthcare<\/strong>.\u00a0W<\/a>e cannot simply distribute<\/a> a few medications and hope for improvement there<\/span>. We must thoroughly understand the development<\/strong> of malaria and analyse<\/strong> it to establish a sustainable strategy. Of course, we are also continuing our daily work:<\/strong> the Primary Medical Care program<\/a>, which provides care and medication<\/strong> to isolated populations. In March, we will also distribute our\u00a0new prevention posters<\/a>\u00a0on alcoholism,\u00a0smoking,<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0waste management<\/a>\u00a0and, in\u00a0May,<\/strong> the new campaign on STDs\u2014campaigns<\/span>\u00a0that will last for years<\/strong> and that start tomorrow.<\/p>\nAnd then in April, there will be a new three-day training<\/a> for Kawan Sehat Health Agents<\/a>.
