This new Picture of the Day<\/a> features individuals who have just received mosquito net<\/a>s. We are currently in a region of eastern Indonesia where malaria is widespread and potentially fatal. Despite the sporadic distribution of mosquito nets by the government, many families still lack adequate protection<\/strong>. To address this issue, the Zero Malaria<\/a> and Primary Medical Care<\/a> Program of Fair Future and the Kawan Baik Foundation are distributing dozens of long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets<\/a> (LLINs).<\/p>\n We have just brought 320 of these nets<\/strong>, weighing approximately 600 kilograms, with our logistics truck to ensure their distribution to neglected families, particularly in Umalulu as part of a large-scale initiative, but also, as seen in this photo, to families in Kawangu – Hudumburung<\/a> during our last day of medical care.<\/p>\n These mosquito nets<\/a>, which cost around US$15 each,<\/strong> are not like other products. They are specially designed to last five years; however, this longevity depends on proper care and maintenance: washing every six months, prompt repair of tears, and regular ventilation. Our teams<\/a> dedicate considerable time to educating families about these essential practices\u2014mainly through our educational materials<\/a>, books<\/a>, and prevention poster<\/a>s\u2014because a mosquito net<\/a> represents much more than just protection: it is a real shield.<\/p>\n One net \u00d7 5 people \u00d7 365 nights = 1,825 nights of protection each year<\/strong><\/p>\n Over five years = 9,125 nights of protection from malaria<\/strong><\/p>\n It costs only\u00a0IDR 206,000\u00a0(about\u00a0<\/em>13 USD, 12 CHF, or 20 AUD<\/em>)<\/em>\u2014the price of a simple meal\u2014for five years of safety.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Beyond a mere statistic, I assert that these figures translate into lower fevers, fewer children<\/strong> absent from school, more mothers<\/strong> available to care for their families, and ultimately, fewer deaths.<\/p>\n This is merely one part of the solution.<\/strong> By integrating indoor residual spraying<\/a> (IRS)<\/em><\/a>, rapid diagnostic tests, effective treatments, education, and community engagement, we can begin to develop comprehensive<\/a> medical responses to combat a disease<\/a>\u00a0that continues to claim too many lives.<\/strong><\/p>\n Fair Future’s Zero Malaria<\/a> Program, in partnership with Primary Medical Care<\/a>, Rotary International<\/a>, Rotary Against Malaria,<\/a> and Malaria Partners International<\/a>, goes far beyond simply distributing supplies.
