<\/a>Eight ferrocement reservoirs now bring safe water and health to Hambarita.<\/p><\/div>\n
Today marks a significant milestone for<\/strong> Hambarita\u2013Laindatang<\/a>, a remote and arid region where access to clean water has long been a distant dream.<\/p>\n The Fair Future Foundation<\/a> and Kawan Baik Indonesia<\/a> have officially allocated the final tranche of funding to complete the last two of eight ferrocement water reservoirs, each with a capacity of 5,300 litres. This final investment of 18,800 Swiss francs<\/a> (about IDR. 320,000,000)<\/em> has brought life<\/strong> and practical solutions<\/strong> to this community.<\/p>\n These eight reservoirs<\/strong> are not just structures of cement and steel but vital lifelines that link health and wellbeing. For the first time, around 100 people in Hambarita\u2013Laindatang<\/a> have consistent access to clean<\/strong>, safe<\/strong> water<\/strong>. This access significantly reduces child mortality,<\/a> limits the spread of waterborne diseases<\/a>, and lays a foundation for improved nutrition<\/a>, hygiene, and overall quality of life.<\/p>\n The project has taken years<\/strong> to develop, from initial concept designs to overcoming the complex logistical and construction challenges of working in ultra-rural East Sumba. The final funds have been transferred today, 08.07.2025<\/strong>, and work on reservoirs seven and eight<\/strong> is underway, with completion within reach.\u00a0Alongside these tanks, the Fair Future team is on the field<\/a> finalising a\u00a0large 113 m\u00b3 reservoir<\/a>,\u00a0MataWai Urang<\/strong>\u2014the \u201cSource of Rainwater\u201d\u2014<\/em>destined to become the region\u2019s primary rainwater harvesting system<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0Together, these initiatives mark an unprecedented leap forward for this impoverished community.<\/p>\n Each of the ferrocement reservoirs bears a culturally meaningful name in the local Sumbanese language, beginning with \u201cWai,\u201d meaning \u201cwater.\u201d These names reflect both their practical purpose and the deep cultural significance of water:<\/strong><\/p>\n These names embody identity<\/strong>, solutions<\/strong>, and resilience<\/strong>, honouring donors’ generosity<\/strong> and paying tribute to the lives now connected through these precious water sources.<\/p>\n Without these reservoirs, daily life in Hambarita\u2013Laindatang<\/a> involved arduous journeys for water, with families walking kilometres under the relentless sun to fill jerry cans<\/a> from unreliable and often unsafe sources. Now, the situation has changed. Clean water is within reach, offering healthier, longer, and more dignified lives.<\/p>\n This is not merely infrastructure; it is a matter of survival. It is health.
