Polio resurgence in remote areas of Indonesia: an urgent call to action<\/strong><\/p>\n In recent times, polio<\/a> cases have increased<\/strong> dramatically<\/strong> in remote areas of Indonesia, mainly due to inadequate hygiene<\/a>, poor sanitation<\/a> standards and limited access to clean water<\/a>. This highly infectious disease<\/a> is caused by the poliovirus<\/strong> and targets the nervous system<\/strong>; it can lead to permanent paralysis<\/strong> within hours, most commonly affecting children under five<\/strong> years of age as we recently saw in Sumba Timur<\/a> where all three children in a family were affected. The virus is spread through the faecal-oral route<\/strong>, particularly in areas with poor sanitation facilities<\/a> and, as here, no sanitation.<\/strong><\/p>\n As there is no cure for polio<\/a>, prevention through vaccination and proper hygiene practices<\/a> is crucial. Fair Future is working<\/a> to raise awareness<\/strong> of the disease by improving sanitation facilities<\/a> and ensuring access to clean water<\/a>.
