This New “Picture of the Day”<\/a> shows the construction of ferrocement<\/a> tanks<\/strong> in exceptionally remote locations<\/strong>. It shows two huge tanks under construction, each with a massive 10,000-litre capacity<\/strong>, twice the size of our usual tanks.<\/p>\n In areas where access to clean water<\/strong> is non-existent, our teams on the ground are building tanks using so-called \u2018ferrocement<\/a>\u2019 technology<\/strong>. These tanks have been designed to store rainwater<\/strong> <\/a>collected from local rooftops, once these rooftops have been checked and determined to be \u2018fit for collection\u2019. Our specially developed filtration systems<\/strong> ensure that before entering these 10,000 litre ferrocement<\/a> containers<\/strong>, all collected rainwater<\/a> undergoes a thorough cleaning process to ensure that the resulting stored water remains safe and clean<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The ferrocement<\/a> construction<\/strong> process involves layering wire mesh<\/strong> with cement<\/strong> and sand mortar<\/strong> to create strong and durable structures of a thin nature. Due to its exceptional resilience<\/strong> and insensitivity to damage from external forces, this material is highly recommended for us to construct water tanks<\/strong> located in remote locations<\/strong> where resources are scarce<\/strong> and sustainable solutions<\/strong> are a priority.<\/p>\n These tanks offer a considerable advantage due to their hygienic structure<\/strong> that prevents the infiltration of air, light, heat or any form of impurities<\/strong>, including dirt and animal waste. Equipped with specially designed lids, these tanks are sealed against contaminants, thus ensuring clean and safe water storage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The construction of these tanks is both cost-effective<\/strong> and relatively easy. A 10,000 litre ferrocement<\/a> tank<\/strong>, as shown in the photo, would require approximately 1,000 Swiss francs<\/strong> to construct. Therefore, creating a reservoir<\/strong> that can hold up to 20,000 litres<\/strong> \u2013 enough for many families in a village or region to access Clean Water<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 would cost around 2,000 Swiss francs<\/strong>.\u00a0East Sumba<\/strong>\u00a0has no traditional means of obtaining\u00a0clean drinking water<\/strong>;\u00a0rainwater<\/a> must, therefore, be used if survival is at a premium here.<\/p>\n The impact of these sanitised water reservoirs<\/a><\/strong> on extremely remote households<\/strong> is considerable. The availability of pure drinking water<\/strong> significantly reduces infectious diseases<\/strong> <\/a>such as polio<\/a>, malaria<\/a><\/strong> and dysentery<\/strong><\/a>. Better cleanliness<\/strong> and sanitation practices<\/strong> translate into better health conditions<\/strong> that reduce the burden of disease<\/strong><\/a>, helping families to focus more on improving food intake<\/strong> and living conditions<\/strong>.
