Katrina’s Appeal for Clean Water, Health, and Dignity in Lapinu<\/h4>\n
Check out Katrina’s 90-second testimony on YouTube by clicking here<\/a><\/p>\n For the past three years, <\/a>Katrina<\/a> has served as a Kawan Sehat<\/a> health agent<\/a> in the isolated village of Lapinu<\/a>, East Sumba. Every day, she strives to improve the well-being of her 300 neighbours; however, together, they confront challenges that often seem insurmountable.<\/p>\n In Lapinu<\/a>, clean water<\/a> is not just difficult to find; it’s nearly absent.\u00a0The community depends on a lone natural spring that fails to meet their needs, lacks protection, and is often\u00a0contaminated<\/a>.<\/span> Every drop used for drinking, cooking, or cleaning can pose a risk of disease transmission. Waterborne illnesses<\/a> such as diarrhoea, typhoid fever, and intestinal infections are rampant. Inadequate hygiene leads to pervasive skin issues and joint pain among almost all residents. Malaria<\/a><\/span> remains a persistent menace due to stagnant pools that serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.<\/p>\n “Waterborne diseases are preventable, yet in Lapinu, they are a daily battle. Clean water isn\u2019t a luxury\u2014it\u2019s a matter of survival.” \u2013 Alex Wettstein<\/a>, CEO & Founder, Fair Future Foundation<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The absence<\/a> of clean water is a hidden menace, particularly for children, the elderly, and pregnant women who are most at risk. Inadequate hydration<\/a> and poor sanitation<\/a> can transform minor infections into dangerous health threats. Infants often have weakened immune systems from the start due to this issue. Additionally, open wounds become prone to infection easily; in places lacking <\/a>medical infrastructure, conditions that could be treated typically turn fatal.<\/p>\n Compounding the crisis, there is virtually no sanitation infrastructure<\/a>. Most families lack toilets and resort to open defecation<\/a>, which contaminates<\/a> their clean water. The cycle of disease persists unceasingly. Katrina<\/a> witnesses this daily; she addresses the symptoms but cannot eliminate the root cause\u2014the scarcity of clean water remains unchanged.<\/p>\n Despite all the challenges, the people of Lapinu<\/a> envision a future in which they can access clean water for drinking and washing. They dream of a time when children are free from preventable diseases and families no longer have to trek kilometres each day merely to gather unsafe water.<\/p>\n In this 90-second video<\/a>, Katrina<\/a> tells her story.
