This photo captures our commitment to early detection and community-based care.<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Three months of action against one of the world\u2019s deadliest diseases<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Malaria remains a serious global health issue, especially in regions like East Sumba, Indonesia, where transmission rates stay stubbornly high. That is why the <a href=\"https:\/\/fairfuturefoundation.org\/about-fair-future\/\">Fair Future Foundation<\/a>, in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malariapartnersinternational.org\">Malaria Partners International<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rotary.org\">Rotary<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/kawanbaikindonesia.org\/\">Kawan Baik Indonesia<\/a>, has launched the East Sumba Malaria Prevention Project 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Over three months, this programme combines laboratory training, mosquito control, education, and the distribution of protective nets to save lives and improve community health,\u00a0from <strong>August to October<\/strong>, to reduce malaria\u2019s impact.<\/p>\n<p>A study completed earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/fairfuturefoundation.org\/umalulu-malaria-baseline\/\">this year in Umalulu<\/a> identified significant transmission hotspots, coupled with low community awareness and limited diagnostic capacity. Our goal is to tackle these issues <strong>through an inclusive<\/strong> strategy focusing on <strong>education<\/strong>, <strong>prevention<\/strong>, and <strong>strengthening laboratory services<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What We Will Do<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Training for Laboratory Analysts<\/strong>: A team of 28 participants will receive specialised training from <strong>WHO-certified mentors<\/strong> in malaria slide reading, rapid diagnostic testing, and microscope maintenance. This training will improve diagnostic accuracy and enable timely, effective treatment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Community Awareness<\/strong>: Through educational sessions and eye-catching billboards, this campaign aims to engage <strong>over 1,000 people<\/strong> directly and reach many more indirectly. The goal is to dispel misconceptions about malaria and promote early health-seeking behaviours.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS)<\/strong>: Using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789240083998\">WHO-approved insecticides<\/a>, high-risk households will undergo IRS to eliminate malaria-carrying mosquitoes, significantly reducing local transmission.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution of Insecticide-Treated Nets<\/strong>: The initiative will distribute 146 new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/immunization-vaccines-and-biologicals\/essential-programme-on-immunization\/integration\/linking-with-other-health-interventions\/long-lasting-insecticidal-nets-(llins)\">long-lasting insecticidal nets<\/a> <em>(LLINs)<\/em> to complement the <a href=\"https:\/\/fairfuturefoundation.org\/umalulu-malaria-baseline\/\">320 nets already given<\/a> out in the region. These nets provide continuous protection for families every night for over five years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Monitoring and Evaluation<\/strong>: Continuous data collection, field reporting, and active community participation will ensure transparency and achieve effective results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The project will focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/rgoYJGBmhp4MGqdu7\">Umalulu<\/a>, Laitipi, and <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/Pc1SJYbGDBwEDWD78\">Waingapu Districts<\/a>, particularly targeting children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Indirectly, <strong>more than 270,000 residents<\/strong> across East Sumba <strong>will benefit from increased<\/strong> awareness and preventative measures.<\/p>\n<p>This effort is coordinated with<a href=\"https:\/\/fairfuturefoundation.org\/swiss-humanitarian-expertise\/\"> Swiss expertise<\/a> and is a key part of the 2028 Malaria Elimination Roadmap. By enhancing laboratory capacity, safeguarding households, and empowering local communities, the <a href=\"https:\/\/fairfuturefoundation.org\/why-we-do-this\/\">Fair Future Foundation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/kawanbaikindonesia.org\/\">Kawan Baik Indonesia<\/a> are committed to <strong>making East Sumba malaria-free<\/strong> in the long term.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fighting malaria is a relentless pursuit<\/strong>. Every trained health worker, every household treated, and every child protected by a net represents a life saved.
