Primary Medical Care East Sumba Quarterly Field Report<\/strong><\/h4>\nFrom December 2024 to March 2025<\/strong>, our 20 Kawan Sehat health agents documented 798 patients<\/strong> and 1,421 health cases<\/strong> in some of the most remote villages of East Sumba. Six out of ten<\/strong> patients were children, and nearly 60 per cent were women<\/strong>.<\/p>\nMost sought assistance for respiratory infections, fever, wounds, body pains, diarrhoea, or skin diseases. This illustrates what \u201cno access to care\u201d looks like when you put numbers on it.<\/p>\n
Respiratory infections<\/a>, especially in children, can quickly worsen<\/strong> if untreated, potentially leading to pneumonia or other complications. This highlights the importance of timely intervention and preventive education. Fevers often indicate underlying issues such as malaria <\/a>or dengue<\/a>, common in tropical regions like East Sumba<\/a>. (See our map here<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\nAll cases were treated at homes<\/strong>, schools<\/strong>, churches<\/strong>, reading gardens, or village<\/strong> halls. The nearest health centre<\/a> is often 2-3 hours away by motorbike<\/strong>, and it can be unreachable during the rains. Kawan Sehat agents<\/a> provide first aid<\/strong>, distribute medicines, and educate<\/a> the community. For serious cases, they consult with our nurses or doctors<\/strong> via WhatsApp to organise referrals to the nearest Puskesmas<\/a> (government health clinic).<\/em><\/p>\nThis quarter, we supplied and monitored 20 agents<\/a> across seven<\/strong> subdistricts and eight<\/strong> health centres, replenishing supplies via the Kawan Sehat app<\/a>. We enhanced prevention efforts by introducing new posters<\/strong> on waste management<\/a>, alcohol dangers<\/a>, and passive smoking<\/a>, and by holding numerous Clean and Healthy Living sessions. Children learned vital skills such as handwashing<\/a>, toothbrushing<\/a>, recognising malaria symptoms<\/a>, identifying nutritious foods<\/a>, and caring for the environment.<\/p>\nIn collaboration with\u00a0Puskesmas Kawangu<\/a>\u00a0and district health authorities, we organised an integrated health day during which\u00a0152 individuals<\/strong>\u00a0received consultations,\u00a0vital sign checks<\/strong>, blood tests for uric acid, cholesterol, and\u00a0glucose, rapid malaria testing, immunisations, and maternal and child health services.\u00a0Respiratory infections<\/strong>, muscle pains<\/strong>, and digestive<\/strong> issues were widespread<\/strong>. We also distributed soap and reusable clothing to the families most in need.<\/p>\nFor this second quarter, 125,192,898 IDR<\/strong> were allocated for medicines, monitoring, coordination, and community health promotion. The remaining 290,579,602 IDR<\/strong> from received donations has already been earmarked for third-quarter<\/strong> activities, including new training sessions<\/a>, another round of medicine distribution, monitoring visits, and new field publications.<\/p>\nWithout this Primary Medical Care<\/a> programme by Fair Future and Kawan Baik Indonesia, many cases each quarter would remain untreated<\/strong> or delayed<\/strong>. Residents would keep suffering from infections, pain, wounds, chronic issues, and a lack of preventive info.
