If We Don’t Do It, Then Who Will? <\/strong>The 10th World Water Forum<\/strong><\/a> has come to a close, but the issues we face are far from over. Reflecting on our journey and the recent events, I am compelled to share my thoughts and the profound frustration we experience in trying to be heard despite our unwavering commitment and substantial efforts over the past 15 years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n My name is Alex Wettstein, and I founded the Fair Future Foundation<\/strong>. Last February, we celebrated fifteen years of uninterrupted activity<\/strong>, serving the poorest in the world’s most rural regions<\/strong>. We have been active in East Sumba<\/strong> since 2019, working tirelessly to improve people’s lives<\/strong> by addressing the critical issues<\/strong> of water<\/strong><\/a>, infectious diseases<\/strong>, and severe malnutrition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Our mission is clear: finding simple and innovative solutions<\/strong> to these immense problems. About 65%<\/strong> of families in East Sumba do not have access to clean water<\/a><\/strong>. On average, people have only two litres of water<\/a> per day per person<\/strong> for everything \u2013 drinking, cooking, and washing. In these conditions, washing becomes a monthly luxury<\/strong>, and every drop of water is recovered and reused.<\/p>\n Our voices are often not heard<\/strong> despite our significant<\/strong> work, engaging with ultra-rural communities, building infrastructures<\/strong> such as ferro-cement reservoirs<\/strong> and sanitary installations<\/strong>, and educating entire communities. The recent 10th World Water Forum<\/strong><\/a> allowed us to share our experiences and seek collaborative solutions. Still, our<\/strong>\u00a0request was met with silence<\/strong> and an exorbitant registration fee<\/strong>, which we cannot afford.<\/p>\n Our 15-minute documentary<\/strong> film, “Matawai, The Shades of Water<\/strong>,<\/a>” was created to highlight the critical and vital problems<\/strong> faced by the populations of East Sumba. Sumba is one of the driest regions in the world<\/strong>, and finding water<\/a> here is a Herculean task<\/strong> due to logistical challenges: no access, no electricity, and, paradoxically, no water for drilling.<\/p>\n The water<\/a> here is a matter of life or death before all.<\/strong>\u00a0The people in these regions are accustomed to drinking contaminated water without understanding why they fall ill<\/a> or why so many children<\/a>, pregnant women, and vulnerable individuals die. Our work involves educating these communities<\/strong>, drilling deep wells<\/strong>, and providing the necessary infrastructure to ensure access to clean water<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n We are frustrated but not discouraged<\/strong>. This frustration fuels our determination<\/strong> to do even more<\/strong> for those we help with so few resources. We know that such forums’ sponsors are among the world’s wealthiest companies<\/strong>\u00a0and the biggest polluters<\/strong>. They sell water<\/a> that no one here can afford, turning a vital resource<\/strong> into a commodity that should be accessible for free to those who need it most.<\/p>\n “If we don\u2019t do it, then who will?”<\/strong> This question drives us every day. We are the ones on the ground, facing these challenges head-on. We cannot rely on those who prioritize profit over humanity. Water<\/a> should be used to live<\/strong>, not to make others live off it. It should be available for drinking<\/strong>, washing<\/strong>, and growing fresh vegetables<\/strong>, to sell and create small opportunities, and to feel good in body and mind.<\/p>\n Thank you for listening<\/strong>.
