<\/a>We are trying to convince Arniyanti’s parents to let us take care of their daughter<\/p><\/div>\n
Arniyanti, 14: Fighting the disease and overcoming abandonment:<\/strong> Arniyanti lives in Hudumburung<\/a>, an isolated village without clean water<\/a> and electricity<\/a> and accessing it is frankly very complicated.\u00a0For\u00a0ten years<\/strong>, this young girl has lived with a\u00a0large tumour<\/strong>\u00a0(<\/em>Lymphoma<\/em><\/a>\u00a0or, by chance, just a\u00a0<\/em>Lipoma<\/em><\/a>)<\/em> on the right side of her neck, comparable to the size of a “medium mango”<\/em>.<\/span> This mass of a significant size, is located under her lower jaw and extends over her neck. This first tumour, called “main”<\/em>, is accompanied by three smaller tumours<\/strong> which follow the first and extend over her shoulder and upper body. Despite the seriousness<\/strong> of her condition, she has never received attention and, therefore, has had no medical care until recently, thanks to Veronika<\/strong> (one of the Kawan Sehat agents<\/a>)<\/em> and the Fair Future Foundation team<\/a>.<\/p>\n The deadly duo – Tuberculosis and medical neglect:<\/strong> Hudumburung<\/a> is a hotbed of tuberculosis<\/a>, with many cases reported. Arniyanti<\/strong> has been living with an “aunt”<\/em> for years, who also cares for an elderly woman with the disease, who has TB<\/a>. Our concerns were confirmed when the Mantoux test<\/a> indicated Arniyanti<\/strong> was infected with TB<\/a> after the required waiting period. In this region where infectious diseases<\/a> spread unchecked, her diagnosis further jeopardizes<\/strong> her already fragile health.<\/p>\n In these remote areas,<\/strong> diseases multiply due to a lack of medical care<\/a>, infrastructure, and medication; fear often prevails, fear but also a lack of education<\/a>. Preventive information is minimal or does not reach these remote areas without internet access. As a result, treatment delays are expected, turning each disease<\/strong> into a potentially deadly threat.<\/p>\n Imprisoned by poverty and immobilized by fear,<\/strong>\u00a0Arniyanti’s parents “abandoned”<\/em> her due to the potential financial pressure (fear related to lack of information and education)<\/em> that her treatment could impose. They have even refused<\/strong> for years any medical consultations and forbidden a potential surgery! With seven other<\/strong> children to support, their extreme poverty made seeking medical assistance for Arniyanti<\/strong> unimaginable. In these parts, Arniyanti’s family’s situation and all that comes with it are not isolated<\/strong>, far from it; in fact, they are very common<\/strong>.<\/p>\n “No child should suffer in silence, especially not for ten years. We take action to bring care and hope to those who need it most.” <\/em>\u2014 Alex Wettstein<\/a>, CEO & Founder of Fair Future Foundation<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Convincing Arniyanti’s parents to allow our intervention<\/strong> has proven to be a considerable challenge<\/strong>. We have tried communicating with them, but they do not seem to listen or understand. Language is not a barrier as we speak the local language. It appears that they are reluctant<\/strong> to take our advice into account due to their social and medical<\/strong> difficulties. They cannot afford to go to the hospital, leaving them isolated and trapped in extreme poverty<\/a> without access to necessary medical care.<\/a><\/p>\n Continued efforts to address outstanding issues:<\/strong> Although Arniyanti<\/strong> has not yet been admitted to the hospital, our team manages her case. Medical facilities here operate with outdated infrastructure<\/strong> and little equipment.\u00a0Initial medical tests have revealed worrying abnormalities<\/strong>, including in her blood tests, which showed significant discrepancies in lymphocyte levels<\/a> and other crucial markers<\/a>. An X-ray<\/strong> was also done; we expect the results tomorrow, 18.10.2024. Further medical tests are also scheduled tomorrow to determine the cause of her condition and establish an appropriate treatment plan.<\/p>\n Difficulties accessing healthcare in remote areas:<\/strong> In villages like Hudumburung<\/a>, access to healthcare<\/a> is very limited.\u00a0No nearby hospitals or medical centres\u00a0(<\/em>Puskesmas<\/em><\/a>)<\/em> exist<\/span>,<\/em> and essential medicines are often unavailable<\/strong>. Every sick child like Arniyanti<\/strong> highlights the shortcomings of a failing healthcare system<\/a>. Without<\/strong> adequate infrastructure and transportation options, getting medical help becomes an insurmountable<\/strong> challenge. That\u2019s why we launched the Primary Medical Care<\/a> Program over two years ago<\/strong>, as it has helped save lives and will hopefully save Arniyanti<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Taking steps to break the cycle:<\/strong> We have been helping Arniyanti<\/strong> navigate the complex journey of receiving care, from medical appointments to administrative hurdles, for several days. The lack of identification<\/strong> has made even the simplest tasks difficult, as Arniyanti<\/strong> does not have an ID, a widespread problem in the region. Despite this, we are committed to ensuring she receives the medical care<\/a> she deserves. This is a battle for her health, a fight against systemic injustice, and the right to medical care<\/a> for all.<\/p>\n We must not neglect these forgotten people, children<\/strong> and adults<\/strong>. Their silence is a cry for help<\/a>, and we are responding with practical solutions like the Primary Medical Care<\/a> Program. Every day without treatment in these areas brings them closer to what could be described as a \u201cthreat.\u201d<\/p>\n While Arniyanti\u2019s<\/strong> case is now receiving the attention she deserves, many others remain hidden\u2014lost to illness, poverty, and social, medical, and educational isolation. We will continue to fight for Arniyanti<\/strong> and every child like her who deserves proper care<\/a> and a chance at a better future<\/a>. Sustaining this program<\/a> is imperative to ensure that these vulnerable communities have continuous access to healthcare.
