Fair Future and Kawan Baik teams are searching for water sources (groundwater) in a village in Central Sumba, Sumba Tengah.
It’s a long and tedious job that makes us walk for miles under a blazing sun. This work is linked to a feasibility study for a deep drilling project, which will aim – in a few weeks – to provide access to clean water and healthy toilets for a few hundred families.
These are full days of work, as part of a new #waterconnections project, in the centre of Sumba (Sumba Tengah). New territory for our work teams. We are in the village of Tanah Mabanas (which means Hot Earth) within the framework of an important task carried out in favour of the families of the church of Maria Ratu Karmel Palawacu. This village bears its name well; It’s scorching. And water is very scarce here. To our knowledge and after research and meetings, no drilling here fully functions. Many are dry or have never found water.
The priest Sirilus from Flores receives us in his catholic church. This drilling, which we wish to carry out quickly, aims to give access to a source of drinking water to the villagers, that is to say, a hundred families. And when there is water, there will also be healthy toilets for those families who don’t have any at all.
We found four possible drill points. Three are located more than 250 meters from the church at a depth between 60m and 100m. Another is more than 800 meters and 30m deep. From now on, we are studying the possibilities of work according to geological and access criteria.
