Agriculture at Risk: How Climate Change and Drought Are Impacting Farmers\u2019 Ability to Farm and Provide for Their Families<\/p>\n
In the southeastern regions of Indonesia, rural farming communities are facing a critical challenge<\/strong>. Erratic climate change, prolonged droughts<\/strong>, and rising temperature<\/strong>s have disrupted traditional farming practices, making it harder for farmers to grow essential crops like rice, corn, and vegetables. As water supplies dwindle<\/strong> and soil fertility declines<\/strong>, families who rely on agriculture for food and livelihoods<\/strong> are reaching breaking point.<\/p>\n Severe droughts<\/strong> have dramatically reduced<\/strong> agricultural production, leading to food shortages<\/a> and malnutrition<\/a>, particularly affecting children<\/a>. With reduced<\/strong> harvests, families are unable to ensure adequate nutritious food<\/a>, leading to increased cases of stunting, anaemia<\/a> and weakened immune systems<\/a>. Malnourished<\/strong> children struggle to concentrate in school<\/a>, perpetuating cycles of poverty<\/strong> and poor health<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Economically,<\/strong> the crisis is worsening financial instability. When farmers can no longer cultivate<\/strong> their land, they lose their main source of income. In addition, livestock<\/strong>, another vital asset, is affected by water shortages<\/a> and deteriorating rangeland<\/strong> conditions, forcing families to sell their animals<\/strong> at undervalued prices to survive<\/strong>. Local markets are facing reduced food supplies, driving up<\/strong> prices and making it even harder for the poorest families to afford daily meals<\/strong>. We are seeing this more and more<\/strong> here in East Sumba.<\/p>\n From a health perspective<\/strong>, lack of clean water<\/a> and adequate nutrition increases vulnerability<\/strong> to infectious diseases<\/a> such as diarrhea<\/a>, dengue fever<\/a>, and skin infections<\/a>. In areas where water is heavily rationed<\/strong>, poor hygiene practices<\/a> become inevitable, further deteriorating the health conditions of communities.<\/p>\n Farmers struggle with drought and food shortages due to climate change.<\/p><\/div>\n Despite these challenges, Fair Future<\/a> and the Kawan Baik<\/a> Foundation persist in implementing sustainable solutions. The Water Connections<\/a> initiative serves as a critical support system by ensuring communities have access to clean<\/a>, renewable<\/strong> water sources. By constructing wells<\/strong>, reservoirs<\/a>, and solar-powered pumping systems<\/a>, this\u00a0program<\/a>\u00a0not only improves water security but also facilitates efficient\u00a0irrigation<\/strong>\u00a0of farmers\u2019\u00a0gardens <\/strong>and\u00a0crops<\/strong>, helping to mitigate the impact of prolonged droughts.<\/p>\n In addition, our health and prevention campaign<\/a>s are crucial. Posters<\/a> focusing on nutrition<\/strong>, hygiene<\/strong> and disease prevention<\/strong> provide communities with essential knowledge about balanced diets, waste management<\/a> and the importance of clean water. These efforts have enabled families to make more informed decisions about food consumption and hygiene practices, which has a positive impact on their well-being.<\/p>\n These programs<\/a> must continue; they are essential. The survival<\/strong> of these farming communities depends on long-term sustainable<\/strong> solutions. Strengthening water infrastructure<\/strong>, encouraging climate-resilient<\/strong> agricultural practices<\/strong> and expanding nutrition <\/a>education<\/a> are critical steps. Giving families the tools to adapt allows them to farm their land, raise livestock efficiently<\/strong> and ensure a future where their livelihoods are not at the mercy of climate change<\/a>. 2024 was the hottest year on record<\/a>, worsening the water crisis and health risks in remote villages in Indonesia.<\/p>\n As Fair Future<\/a> and Kawan Baik<\/a> move forward, our commitment<\/a> remains constant: to empower<\/a> farmers, protect<\/strong> their livelihoods, and ensure<\/strong> every family is supported in the face of an unpredictable climate<\/a>.
