<\/a>Women’s health agents in East Sumba receive advanced training and medical supplies<\/p><\/div>\n
The Backbone of Care in Rural Sumba \u2013 Kawan Sehat Training, May 2025<\/strong><\/h4>\nTwo weeks<\/strong> ago, in Waingapu, just a few kilometres from our base camp in Rumah Kambera<\/a>, the latest three-day training session for the Kawan Sehat health agents<\/a> took place. These extraordinary<\/a> women,\u00a0 most of whom have no prior medical background<\/strong>, have once again deepened their medical knowledge and refined their skills to provide lifesaving care in villages without<\/strong> a doctor or health facility.<\/p>\nThis training centred on revisiting the fifteen core modules<\/a> of primary medical care that Fair Future<\/a> and Kawan Baik<\/a> co-developed through the Indonesian version of Where There Is No Doctor<\/a>. It included practical indoor and outdoor exercises, such as measuring vital signs<\/strong>, conducting basic blood tests<\/strong>, managing real-case scenarios<\/strong>, and using medical tools<\/strong> with greater confidence<\/strong> and precision<\/strong>.<\/p>\nThis time, training was reinforced with new health education tools. The agents received four additional health promotion posters\u2014bringing the total to nine<\/em><\/a>\u2014that they now use to educate communities, house by house, about hygiene, disease prevention, nutrition, and other critical topics. These visual aids<\/a> are part of a larger communication strategy that empowers these women to become true agents of behavioural change<\/strong> in their villages.<\/p>\n\n“In places where no doctors can go, these women have become the frontline of survival. Their dedication saves lives every single day.” \u2014 Alex Wettstein<\/a>, CEO Fair Future<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\nEach Kawan Sehat health agent<\/a> left this session with a newly restocked medical backpack<\/a> containing over 100 essential items<\/a>, including antibiotics<\/strong>, fever reducers<\/strong>, wound dressings<\/strong>, bandages<\/strong>, antiseptics<\/strong>, and diagnostic tools<\/strong>. With these kits and their growing knowledge, they prevent infections<\/strong>, treat fevers<\/strong>, disinfect wounds<\/strong>, and monitor health<\/strong> daily across dozens of villages.<\/p>\nThis was the third full training session<\/strong> over the last three years<\/strong>. However, beyond these intensive workshops<\/a>, the medical team from Fair Future<\/a> meets with the agents every two months<\/strong> directly in the field<\/a> to evaluate cases, provide guidance, and support their ongoing challenges.<\/p>\nWhat made this May session special was the participation of new contributors: Indonesian Red Cross<\/a> delegates from Yogyakarta<\/a> and the regional head of infectious<\/strong> disease control\u2014including malaria\u2014<\/em>from the East Sumba health department. Their presence added a layer of recognition and collaboration essential to long-term impact.<\/p>\nThese women are more than volunteers.<\/strong> They are front-line healthcare providers in one of Southeast Asia’s most medically underserved regions. They save lives every day through knowledge, compassion, and resilience. In May 2025, Kawan Sehat health agents<\/strong> completed their third intensive training session in Waingapu. Without formal education, these women reviewed 15 medical care modules, practised diagnostics, restocked vital equipment, and received new health promotion posters.
