Our programme, expected to last several months, works to reduce the spread of malaria and alleviate the hardships those affected by the disease face. We are committed to achieving this goal by prioritizing the detection (screening)<\/em>, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of malaria in Indonesia’s most affected areas.<\/p>\n We aim to establish a program against Malaria<\/a> as soon as possible, with the help of God.<\/strong><\/p>\n Our team is apprehensive about the devastating malaria<\/a> outbreak<\/strong> in East Sumba<\/a>. Regrettably, the number of cases has spiked dramatically, with over 28,000 cases<\/strong> reported within the initial three months of 2023<\/strong>, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children. Our latest data reveals that the cases are still rising<\/strong> despite the impending dry season.<\/p>\n Our organisation is dedicated to promoting public health in the region, and we’re deeply concerned about the impact of malaria on vulnerable communities. Sadly, malaria remains a leading cause of illness and death in Indonesia, particularly in East Sumba, where we’re based.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n In children, fever is frequently associated with malaria, with a probability of diagnosis of 85%. <\/strong>This map<\/a> (displayed below)<\/em> indicates the regions impacted the most by the epidemic and the specific villages we focus on to implement this critical socio-medical program<\/a>.<\/p>\n Our emphasis is on prevention, and we aim to increase the distribution of mosquito nets<\/strong>, ensure the availability of crucial antimalarial<\/strong> medications, carry out numerous rapid diagnostic<\/strong> tests and for a highly effective strategy<\/strong> for malaria prevention, have more equipment for indoor residual spraying<\/strong> (IRS). Expanding school-based malaria screening to other central sites<\/a> helps identify people who may have contracted the disease.<\/p>\n The malaria epidemic makes the situation socially and medically very difficult. This will help us reach as many people as possible<\/strong> and ensure that they are informed about the dangers of malaria<\/a> and how to prevent it.<\/p>\n Apart from raising awareness, our teams on the field can provide training sessions for health workers and volunteers. These sessions can cover malaria prevention strategies, early recognition of symptoms, and available diagnostic and treatment options. By doing so, we can equip those on the front lines of healthcare with the necessary knowledge and skills to prevent and treat malaria<\/a>.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Implementation of preventive measures” _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” open=”off”]Numerous methods are utilised to prevent, screen, and treat malaria.<\/strong><\/p>\n Fair Future is committed to providing mosquito nets to families<\/strong> who do not yet have them in high-risk areas, prioritizing vulnerable populations such as pregnant<\/strong> women, children<\/strong>, and chronically ill<\/strong>. The mosquito nets will ideally be impregnated with insecticide. Additionally, we will provide instructions<\/strong> on properly using and maintaining the nets.<\/p>\n Our malaria<\/a> control program in East Sumba integrates Indoor Residual Spraying<\/strong> (IRS), which involves applying insecticides to the interior surfaces of homes in areas at high risk of malaria<\/a> transmission. We will collaborate with local authorities to organize IRS<\/strong> activities in targeted communities to make this happen. We will train<\/strong> and deploy<\/strong> qualified personnel to spray effectively in each village house.<\/p>\n Our goal is also to encourage participation from the community in environmental management<\/strong> efforts to decrease<\/strong> the number of mosquito breeding sites<\/strong>. To do this, we provide information on the risks of stagnant water in homes -especially places where farm animals are kept, such as pigs, water buffaloes, goats and horses-<\/em>. We can also define a rehabilitation program for certain villages. We will also focus on improving stormwater drainage systems and sanitary facilities, which we have done for years with the #waterconnections<\/a> program.<\/p>\n Furthermore, we educate the communities in villages severely impacted by Malaria<\/a> about proper rainwater storage<\/a> techniques. This is the water they rely on for daily consumption, including drinking, cooking, and eating. Currently, most water tanks<\/a> are not air-tight and remain exposed to heat and sunlight, which we aim to rectify.[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Diagnosis and screening in rural areas” _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” open=”off”]When combating malaria in rural areas, logistical challenges make screening and diagnosis even more difficult and complex.<\/b><\/p>\n This initiative aims<\/b> to establish temporary diagnostic and screening centres in the affected regions. It will employ rapid diagnostic tests for malaria<\/a>, laboratory equipment and detection via microscope.<\/p>\n Our teams<\/a> will be equipped with screening equipment, such as a microscope, portable electric generator, and a medical truck called the “Truck of Life”<\/a>, and will conduct door-to-door visits.<\/p>\n Every house undergoes an analysis<\/strong> as part of our program. If any patients are found to be infected, they will receive the necessary medical treatment for the first seven days. We also guide families<\/a> in recovering<\/strong> and safeguarding<\/strong> themselves against diseases like Malaria<\/a>. Additionally, we constantly search for areas with stagnant water and assess the sanitation facilities in the villages as part of our standard protocol.<\/p>\n As a component of medical operations, coordinating “door-to-door” mobile units<\/strong> equipped with Rapid Tests<\/strong> is essential to reach the farthest regions. This can be integrated into the Primary Medical Care<\/a> (PMC)<\/em> program, which has proved highly successful. Additionally, extending Malaria<\/a> screening in schools to other central locations can help identify individuals who may be suspected of having contracted the disease. As mentioned above, the first seven days of treatment can be administered directly at home during the “door-to-door” visits. We have been conducting fieldwork and are highly conscious of the situation on the ground.
