Kawan Sehat Health Worker Training: Transforming Communities and Saving Lives<\/p><\/div><\/strong>In remote eastern Indonesia, where medical care is virtually inaccessible, a team of 20 new<\/strong> health workers, including 19 women and one man<\/strong>, are making a profound impact. Trained through the #PrimaryMedicalCare<\/a> program initiated by Fair Future<\/a> and Kawan Baik Indonesia<\/a> (with support from Rotary International<\/a>, East Sumba Region, and our international partners),<\/em> these workers provide essential medical services to tens of thousands<\/strong> of people in areas where medicines are scarce, and health facilities are too far away.<\/p>\n Their training<\/a> allows them to treat illnesses<\/strong> and injuries<\/strong> before they become serious, but their skills go further. They are also equipped to counsel families, children, and vulnerable people living in precarious conditions without access to clean water or electricity. This training saves lives<\/strong> and gives these communities the tools to adopt a healthier lifestyle<\/strong> and manage medical emergencies.<\/a><\/p>\n Before this program was implemented, even minor injuries, such as a cut on the foot, could be life-threatening. The lack of medical care<\/a>, including disinfection and dressing, often led to severe and sometimes fatal infections. Today, thanks to the expertise of health workers, these injuries are treated quickly, preventing infection.<\/a> For more complex diseases such as malaria<\/a>, dengue fever,<\/a> polio<\/a>, tuberculosis<\/a> or dysentery<\/a>, recognising symptoms early and assessing the severity of the disease allows for rapid intervention<\/strong>. If needed, health workers can arrange for patients to be transported to the nearest medical facility, which is often a considerable distance away.<\/strong><\/p>\n A\u00a0recent three-day session<\/strong>\u00a0and nearly\u00a030 hours<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0theory<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0practice <\/strong>covered 14<\/strong> public health medical topics from our training<\/a> manual (see here<\/a>)<\/em>. In addition, more than ten modules<\/strong> were introduced by external mentors, including doctors, nutritionists, dentists, paediatricians, logisticians, water specialists and a communication specialist. These experts helped workers improve their skills in managing “complex” medical cases<\/strong> (See the photos gallery here<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n “This training is not just about teaching medical skills; it’s about giving communities hope and a chance at life. These health agents are the frontline in saving lives.”<\/em> Some modules covered essential topics such as effective communication with vulnerable patients, pediatric care, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)<\/em> and management of infectious diseases<\/a> such as dysentery<\/a>, malaria<\/a> and polio<\/a>. Mastering these skills is crucial in environments where these diseases can be fatal<\/strong> if not treated promptly.<\/p>\n Since the Primary Medical Care<\/a> program began two and a half years ago<\/strong>, these health workers have been active in 20\/22 sub-districts<\/strong>, treating thousands of people and likely saving hundreds of lives, although the precise number is difficult to determine. In addition to providing medical care<\/a>, they have improved<\/strong> living conditions in these communities. The evidence of their impact is undeniable<\/strong>: since their training ended last week, several dozen<\/strong> new cases have already been recorded in the Kawan Sehat application<\/a>. This application,\u00a0developed<\/strong>\u00a0by the Foundation, tracks and records every patient and the\u00a0treatment<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0medication<\/strong> administered (See the photos gallery here<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n The WhatsApp group<\/strong>, comprised of medical teams <\/a>and health workers<\/a>, remains constantly active. The real-time exchange of data on patient health allows for a rapid and coordinated response<\/strong> to the needs of these isolated populations.<\/p>\n This training will be repeated in March 2025<\/strong> as part of the 12-month program<\/strong> for # the third year of #PrimaryMedicalCare<\/a>.
