Hello Kawan’s, dear friends, Madam, Sir and dear families,
Art that is created through a collaboration between artists from different creative fields will inevitably produce something that exceeds all expectations. This is the case in this collaboration between Balinese artists Erick Est (director/videographer), Made Bayak (painter), and Dialog Dini Hari (musicians) on the artwork “Hyena”.
The paintings were created from a green screen in front of which Pohon Tua, alias Dadang Pranoto (singer/guitarist of Dialog Dini Hari) danced and moved to the rhythm of his song “Hyena”. Simultaneously, Made Bayak responded to the movements by sprinkling, with a light fire extinguisher, the paint of colours towards Pohon Tua. These splashes of painting and the dance movements of the singer have drawn captivating and vibrating patterns!
The green background was then divided into five paintings; they became Made Bayak’s first abstract work. This collaboration together with the artwork produced from it, are frozen in time and cannot be reproduced. When original ideas are carried out to their final result, no one can imagine what the result will be. All the actors of this project responded to unpredictable movements in a short time; 6 minutes without repetition.
This unique moment took place on February 3, in a studio in Seminyak, Denpasar. Several media witnessed this performance which was neatly documented by Eric Est Movie. The video “Hyena” will soon be available as a captivating visual interpretation of Eric East.
PAINTER ARTIST STATEMENT
- This painting series consists of cutout fragments from the green screen used as the background as we are working on Hyena song. The green screen is splashed by paints that give the colours onto the main media in the video. The target is Dadang’s body who dances freely, without choreography. We utilise empty fire extinguisher and refills it with paints and repressed it with wind pressure. This method highlights on action painting that usually responds to a certain situation in a certain timeframe. The end result is very abstract, with oozing, overlapping colours in the process of the shooting of the video.
Personally, I rarely and almost never make a totally abstract art form -art for art’s sake- for as long as my career in Arts. There has to be a powerful idea and on solid ground, before I decide to make an artwork.
- The inspiration comes purely from the music of Dialog Dini Hari, specifically from the song Hyena. During the preparation stage, I tried to “get into” the song and the lyric. In the one-take process of the video, I only responded on the beat of the music and the body movement of Dadang.
- The artworks are interconnected with one another; therefore, the title of these paintings are Series 1 to Series 5. After the paintings are finished and the paints dry, I bring the green screen to my studio, spread them out one by one on the floor, then choose the colour splashes and composition as my heart desired then cut them out and arranged them down into the frame and making them an artwork in itself with its own dimensions.

Dadang moves his body wildly, freely, in liberty -to hell with choreography- to his own song “Hyena” that plays in the background. Simultaneously, his body is splashed and sprayed with colourful paints. A green screen as gigantic as the Godzilla serves as the backdrop.
The push and pull of Dadang’s choreography-free body movement is accompanied by a passive-aggressive “Hyena” chorus and brutal blows of colours, producing a dominant green colour and an ersatz collection of black crows. It faintly reveals ghoulish and grotesque abstract impression.

Bayak gets more into the soul of the song “Hyena” and keeps on splashing and spraying Dadang’s body with colourful paints.
Go back green, gives way to the penetrating yellow forward, enters the valley covered in wrath and haunting red.

Smokescreen peacefulness, complete uncertainty and waiting for Godot, everything’s fake. Emerges, opportunistic figures delivering the universe to its decay, green lush in a mirage.
DIALOG DINI HARI
As the name suggests, the band that released EP (Extended Play) titled “Dialog Dini Hari” (2010) it’s mean Early Days Dialogue and “Lengkung Langit” (2012) present songs with lyrics that are like dialogue. Every lyric delivered is full of meaning, without being pushy. The instrument used was also simple, for a song titled “Sahabatku Jadi Hantu” in the album of Taman Hati, Dialog Dini Hari only played acoustic guitar, bass, and drums.
Bayak, born 1980 in Tampaksiring, Gianyar showed promising artistic and musical talent from an early age and went on to study at the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Denpasar, 1999-2006. It was here that he met his future wife, Komang Kartika Dewi who also is a graduate from ISI and teaches art at Sukawati Junior High School. They have one son, Damar Langit Timur, another gifted artist who began creating figurative representations on his own as early as two years of age.
Growing up in the small town of Dumai in Sumatra, Erick Est’s interest in filmmaking began early in life. In Indonesia, Erick is known for his short films and music videos for Indie bands like “Superman Is Dead” and “Navicula”, but he has also made several clips for international bands such as Free Like Me. In 2014, Erick released his documentary film Long Sa’an (“The Journey Back”), a true-life story of a Dayak elder’s journey back to his home village.
