A story of alcohol, pain… and action!
👋 Hi everyone, it’s Alex for another story that I write to you with great pleasure because the subject is still grave,
I want to tell you a story. It's not a beautiful story, and it doesn't end well. But a story is repeated daily in the villages where we work.
A small house, an evening like so many others. A few men sitting on the ground, bottles passing from hand to hand. Laughter rises, voices race. Then, a body collapses, inert, a bare foot placed on his stomach.
His wife, she stays behind. She says nothing, she doesn’t even cry anymore. Just her tired, worn, accustomed look.
Then, as always, danger arrives. Alcohol still flows in their veins, they get on a motorbike, accelerate on a dusty road, unaware of the risk. A few minutes later, a life is taken away. A pedestrian, a child, a father… one more tragedy.
All this for what? For one more evening, drowned in alcohol fumes? Honestly, I experience this here very often, and without exaggeration, there is not a single day that goes by without us hearing about an accident linked to excessive alcohol consumption. I, who only boils very little, it depresses me.
Alcohol, a poison that kills slowly
Alcoholism, here, is not a simple excess. It is a scourge. It destroys bodies, minds and families.
- Cirrhosis – A slow and painful death.
- Heart attacks – Alcohol ruins the heart and arteries.
- Brain damage – Memory loss, cognitive disorders, early dementia.
- Depression and suicide – Alcohol does not repair pain, it worsens it.
- Road accidents – Thousands of lives are shattered each year.
- Domestic violence – How many women are beaten by drunk men?
- etc... See more here.
Alcohol doesn’t just destroy the drinker. It destroys families.
An alcoholic father spends more on his drink than on feeding his children. A drunk man loses his job and plunges his family into poverty. A village where alcohol flows freely becomes a place of violence and despair.
We are launching a campaign to save lives.
Faced with this unsustainable reality, Fair Future is taking action: We are launching our 8th prevention campaign, this one created specifically to combat alcohol abuse in ultra-rural villages.
- Hundreds of fabric posters so that every house remembers the danger;
- Thousands of paper posters posted in schools and medical centers;
- Discussions with families to inform and prevent;
- The duration of this program, like all the others, is indefinite.
The State does nothing, so we do it.
Drinking is not being strong. Drinking is not being free.
It is destroying your own life, that of your children, your wife, your neighbors.
We are not talking about moderation. We are talking about a reality where every drop of alcohol can kill.
It is time to stop the massacre.
Every time we see a child crying with hunger because his father drank it all, Every time a woman hides her bruises under a scarf, Every time a family loses a loved one in an accident caused by alcohol,
We all know here why this campaign is essential. Alcohol does not bring strength or happiness. In excess, it destroys, kills and breaks everything. In this country where it is a real scourge, a source of trafficking and corruption, it is time to talk about it. It is time to act, so we have decided to work on this problem by educating and informing people. Contact me here for more information.
See you very soon. Alex Wettstein
