Understanding and combating malaria in East Sumba: a crucial first step
đź‘‹ Hi everyone, how are you today? This is Alex writing to you from the far east of Indonesia with another story, How are you all?
Here where we work, malaria is not merely a disease; it’s a scourge that infiltrates every home, weakens children, exhausts families, and puts lives at risk. In this village of Umalulu—like in the vast majority of villages in East Sumba—there is no electricity, clean water, proper sanitation, and almost no access to healthcare. Every rainy season, it’s the same story: hundreds of cases of malaria emerge, with no adequate treatment or effective prevention.
That’s why Fair Future is launching a vital field study: With the support of RAM (Rotary Against Malaria), an international malaria control organisation, we will map the disease, assess the prevalence of infections, and understand the urgent needs of the inhabitants. We will go from house to house, interview families, identify risk areas where mosquitoes proliferate, and uncover barriers to accessing care.
Why is this study essential? Before carrying out large-scale interventions, we need to know where and how to act. We lack precise data on the extent of malaria and how it develops and spreads. Without this information, it is impossible to implement a sustainable and effective strategy. Our goal is clear: to understand in order to better protect.
This report will be delivered by the end of July 2025 at the latest, and we hope it will be impactful and decisive.
We do not have a sophisticated laboratory (we plan to create one in 2025), nor a team of entomologists, but we do possess incredibly dedicated teams, vast experience in the field, and, above all, the trust of local populations. That is our strength. By collaborating with local communities, local health workers, and listening to those who live this crisis daily, we will together lay the foundations for a genuine long-term response.
Malaria is preventable and treatable. It should not continue to claim the lives of thousands of children, pregnant women, and other so-called "vulnerable” individuals each year. Thanks to this study, we are building a robust strategy to combat the disease in East Sumba effectively.
We can make a difference, and we will. I promise to keep you in mind.
Thank you for following us and supporting us. Every action counts.
See you soon. Alex Wettstein
