A word from Alex Wettstein: Providing access to health where no one goes.

Dear friends,

I’m taking a moment to write to you after two intense months on the ground in East Sumba. Alongside our heroic Kawan Sehat health agents, we have tirelessly worked on our Primary Medical Care program, treating hundreds of patients each month. It’s tough and exhausting work, but so crucial. Witnessing the strength and resilience of these communities in the face of challenges reminds me daily why we do all of this.

We also made a detour to Surabaya to pick up our new truck, affectionately called Truck n’Load. After more than 20 hours on the road under scorching 40°C heat, we brought it back to Denpasar. This truck can carry up to 4 tons of supplies and is ready for our next mission.

Among our various ongoing projects, the intense drilling in Laindatang has been a real test of endurance, taking nine months and pushing our limits. Ayu and I recently met with architects in Surabaya to discuss plans for a 110m³ reservoir in this area. This crucial project still requires resources to move forward.

Back at Rumah Baik, our base in Denpasar, the hustle continues. We’re preparing for the arrival of 2,024 SolarBuddy lamps from Canberra, ready to bring light to over 100 villages without electricity in East Sumba. Many other projects are also ongoing: building new ferro-cement reservoirs in Hambarita, the Water Connections project in Lapinu, maintaining the Truck of Life that saves so many lives, the malaria control program in Umalulu, and expanding our healthy living gardens in Rumah Kambera, East Sumba. Among others...

I manage all these responsibilities with Ayu, often without the luxury of much rest... Yesterday was the birthday of my eldest daughter Flavie, who I miss enormously. She is an emergency nurse at the CHUV, and I often think that she and her friends would be an invaluable help here on the ground with us. Happy birthday, my Flavie, I miss you dearly and love you.

Kawan Sehat Heroines: Over 500 Lives Protected This Month!

Dear friends and supporters,

This month -as we wrote yesterday in this article-, thanks to the tireless work and unwavering dedication of the Kawan Sehat health agents, we have been able to assist over 500 people in the most remote regions. Indeed, these 500 people received essential care, emergency treatments, as well as crucial medical advice and human support where no one else intervenes.

These remarkable women, all volunteers, represent the beating heart of the Primary Medical Care program. They brave impassable paths to reach wooden houses and offer help and guidance to those in need. Through their unique perspective – using images they have captured themselves or taken by a close friend or relative – you can discover their daily work. These photos capture unique moments: the gentleness of a caring gesture, the intensity of treating a severe injury, or the energy put into thoughtful advice to protect families' health.

We would like to emphasize that this program is truly one-of-a-kind. Continuous training sessions, such as the one organized last September, have yielded tangible results. A full week of intensive training equipped the Kawan Sehat health agents with essential skills. Today, even local authorities wish to collaborate with us. While this does not mean they provide financial or logistical support, they recognize the impact of our work and want to contribute.

Nevertheless, the situation on the ground remains complex. The demand for medicines, medical supplies, bandages, disinfectants, and equipment is significant. Despite your generous support, we still lack essential resources to continue and expand our efforts. Every donation and every act of solidarity is invaluable.

We invite you to explore this extraordinary work through the eyes of these remarkable women who save lives. Together, let’s continue to support them so they can carry on their mission of caring, educating, bringing concrete solutions, and restoring health in regions that lack everything, especially basic medical care.
