A place of care also needs water

More than a billion people receive care in facilities without basic water services, WHO reports. Washing hands, cleaning care spaces and maintaining sanitation all depend on reliable water. At the future Rumah Kambera centre, these needs belong in the planning from the start.
In its global WASH annual report published on 5 October, WHO states that more than one billion people receive care in health facilities without even basic water services.
A consultation room depends on what surrounds it. Staff need water for handwashing and cleaning. Patients need usable sanitation. Water must be available, safe for its intended use, and supported by working storage, distribution, and maintenance.
This is part of the planning for the future Rumah Kambera community socio-medical center in East Sumba. Sanitation, water provision and planned handwashing facilities belong alongside the clinical space, pharmacy and small laboratory. Preparing a place for care means creating the conditions that make care safer every day.
