Malaria Prevention Initiative, Sumba Timur 2023

Dear friends,

We are writing to you today on behalf of the Swiss Fair Future Foundation to tell you about a campaign against malaria that will take place in Eastern Indonesia, more precisely in Sumba Timur. This campaign is vital, and we believe that it cannot be carried out without your invaluable support.

The high incidence of malaria in this area is causing significant worry, especially for susceptible populations like kids and expectant mothers, with more than 80% affected. It's evident that immediate measures must be taken to combat this alarming outbreak, which is why we've launched a program that emphasizes prevention, diagnosis, treatment, skill development, surveillance, and community participation.

The region where we are implementing this program has a high positivity rate, with nearly 100% of people testing positive.

Our foundation will be leading an anti-malaria campaign and prevention effort in a highly impacted region from the end of June until the end of July 2023. Over 100 individuals, including medical personnel, will be involved in this effort. Note that these people are volunteers for this mission.

We will work closely with local health and social authorities but also with our friends and partners from Australia, Switzerland and Indonesia to achieve our goal.

Our medical approach is based on prevention, screening and immediate treatment of patients with Malaria. In addition to public days and meetings in the most remote villages via the Primary Medical Care Program (PMC), we print posters and other publications. We will broadcast audio spots on the only local radio here. This substantive work raises awareness of the importance of the fight against malaria, mainly how to prevent it.

We will use the door-to-door method to carry out more than 3,000 blood screening tests using microscopes and Rapid Tests. All those who test positive will be treated immediately. In addition, we will carry out indoor residual spraying (IRS) to eliminate vector mosquitoes and distribute insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) and anti-malaria soaps by the thousands.

It is alarming that almost half of the global population is prone to malaria, particularly in regions with high transmission rates. The situation is especially dire in East Sumba, Indonesia, where infection rates have surpassed 80%.

To tackle this problem, we have collaborated with local health authorities to implement a vital program that prioritizes susceptible groups such as children and expectant mothers.

We are currently developing our own patient medical data management application (an application which the State could take over), which will allow us to collect valuable information on people living in villages affected by Malaria. This will also help us follow the disease's evolution and incidence in the region over the following months and years.

In parallel, our water and sanitation specialists will assess homes, neighbourhoods and villages where malaria is particularly prevalent. We will put in place immediate corrective actions to improve existing facilities and plan the creation of new rainwater storage tanks and sanitary facilities. Clearing tall grass in villages will also be a priority to reduce mosquito habitats.

We require your financial assistance to successfully execute this wonderful initiative. Fair Future and our partners have already provided CHF. 15,000.- towards our funding, but we still need CHF. 20,000.- to commence the campaign in mid-June 2023 and conclude it by the end of July 2023.

Every single contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference. Your financial support can help save lives and decrease the spread of malaria in this region that has been severely impacted.

If you want to donate or get more information about the campaign, please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected] or WhatsApp at +41796312969 or +6287777333384.

We express our heartfelt gratitude for your attention and support. By working together, we can truly make a significant impact in combating malaria and enhancing the well-being of those impacted by it.
