Our water tests on samples collected from a river near homes in a village around Kawangu, East Sumba, detected E. coli, an indicator of faecal contamination.
Human and animal waste can contaminate water. These tests alone cannot distinguish the source or identify a disease-causing strain. They do show why this water must not be assumed safe to drink untreated.
Where families have no usable toilets, open defecation leaves faeces exposed to runoff and contact with water sources. Preventing this requires both practical hygiene education and access to toilets, water and safe waste management. Education cannot replace infrastructure families lack.
Protecting water sources, managing animal waste, washing hands with soap and making drinking water safe are connected parts of preventing illness.
