Volontaires : le pilier de lâ Zero Malaria initiative dans lâest de Sumba
In the battle against endemic malaria in East Sumba, our volunteers are not just helpers; they are lifesavers, innovators, and the embodiment of community resilience.
In July, the Fair Future Foundation embarked on an unprecedented mission in collaboration with Amis proches et Volontaire de Sumba. Over several days, more than sixty volunteers underwent intensive training in our Medico-Social Base Camp of La maison de Kambera, Est de SumbawĂĄ. The goal? To arm them with the tools, knowledge, and skills needed to combat the endemic scourge of maladie de malaria.
The Zero Malaria Program: A Lifeline for an Entire Community
Financed solely by the Swiss-based Fair Future Foundation, le Zero Malaria Program is a long-term, multi-faceted public santé initiative designed to bring lasting change. Far from a short-term intervention, this groundbreaking program aims to extend its reach to almost 100% of the population in East Sumba. The ambition behind this mission is especially staggering, given the endemic nature of maladie de malaria in the region.
Editor’s note: In public santĂ© terms, an ‘endemic’ refers to a disease that has settled into a community and is consistently found among its residents. In East Sumba, malaria is not merely a recurring issue but a persistent, deeply ingrained santĂ© crisis that demands a thorough and sustained approach.
An All-Hands-On-Deck Approach
Effective combat against this potentially fatal disease requires an army of dedicated Volontaires organized into specialized teams. Each plays a crucial roleâfrom community education using audio, visual, and written material we’ve developed to medical diagnostics and treatment administered by qualified doctors and nurses. Furthermore, logistical teams manage supply chain complexities, laboratory teams focus on precise diagnostics, and other specialized groups handle PulvĂ©risation intĂ©rieure (IRS*) for long-lasting malaria vector control.
The Most Vulnerable Among Us
In the remote regions of East Sumba, Volontaires are not just helpers; they are lifelines and catalysts for monumental change. Trained by the Fair Future Foundation in collaboration with Kawan Baik and Sumba Volunteer, these individuals have become specialized SantĂ© workers, community educators, and logistical masterminds in our Zero Malaria Program. Without them, the toll of this disease would be much higher, especially among the most vulnerableâpregnant women, infants, and the elderly. These individuals are at significantly greater risk due to compromised immunity and lack of access to prompt medical care.
Real-Life Heroes in Extreme Conditions
Nos Volontaires are the unsung heroes of our times. They operate in extreme conditions, working relentlessly for the betterment of their communities. Without them, this monumental task would be definitely unattainable.
Without our dedicated volunteers, the monumental task of tackling endemic malaria in East Sumba would be unattainable. They are the true heroes in this battle for life and health. Alexandre Wettstein, CEO Fair Future Foundation

Volunteers are indispensable in the Zero Malaria program for several key reasons:
- Resource Extension: In areas like East Sumba, there’s a shortage of healthcare professionals. Volunteers fill this gap, allowing the program to reach more people efficiently;
- Local Trust: Volunteers often come from the communities they serve, offering invaluable local knowledge and ensuring greater community engagement;
- Adaptability: Volunteers can quickly shift roles depending on need, from screening to prevention, providing the program with valuable flexibility;
- Cost-Efficiency: Utilizing volunteers allows more funds to be allocated to medical supplies and treatments;
- Extended Outreach: Volunteers can reach remote or challenging areas that might be inaccessible to full-time healthcare professionals;
- Education and Skills: The training that volunteers receive equips them for various healthcare roles, providing long-term benefits to their communities.
Everyone Can Apply here
The beauty of volunteering is its inclusivity. Regardless of your background or skill set, you have a role in this mission. From logistical support to community outreach and even medical roles, we offer training to ensure every volunteer can contribute effectively.
