Unveiling the Heroes Behind Zero Malaria: A Revolutionary Public Health Initiative in East Sumba
In the battle against endemic malaria in East Sumba, our volunteers are not just helpers; they are lifesavers, innovators, and the embodiment of community resilience.
In July, the Fair Future Foundation embarked on an unprecedented mission in collaboration with Kawan Baik and Sumba Volunteer. Over several days, more than sixty volunteers underwent intensive training in our Medico-Social Base Camp of Rumah Kambera, East Sumba. The goal? To arm them with the tools, knowledge, and skills needed to combat the endemic scourge of malaria.
The Zero Malaria Program: A Lifeline for an Entire Community
Financed solely by the Swiss-based Fair Future Foundation, the Zero Malaria Program is a long-term, multi-faceted public health initiative designed to bring lasting change. Far from a short-term intervention, this groundbreaking program aims to extend its reach to almost 100% of the population in East Sumba. The ambition behind this mission is especially staggering, given the endemic nature of malaria in the region.
Editor’s note: In public health terms, an ‘endemic’ refers to a disease that has settled into a community and is consistently found among its residents. In East Sumba, malaria is not merely a recurring issue but a persistent, deeply ingrained health crisis that demands a thorough and sustained approach.
An All-Hands-On-Deck Approach
Effective combat against this potentially fatal disease requires an army of dedicated volunteers organized into specialized teams. Each plays a crucial role—from community education using audio, visual, and written material we’ve developed to medical diagnostics and treatment administered by qualified doctors and nurses. Furthermore, logistical teams manage supply chain complexities, laboratory teams focus on precise diagnostics, and other specialized groups handle Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS*) for long-lasting malaria vector control.
The Most Vulnerable Among Us
In the remote regions of East Sumba, volunteers are not just helpers; they are lifelines and catalysts for monumental change. Trained by the Fair Future Foundation in collaboration with Kawan Baik and Sumba Volunteer, these individuals have become specialized healthcare workers, community educators, and logistical masterminds in our Zero Malaria Program. Without them, the toll of this disease would be much higher, especially among the most vulnerable—pregnant women, infants, and the elderly. These individuals are at significantly greater risk due to compromised immunity and lack of access to prompt medical care.

Last July, the Fair Future Foundation, in partnership with Kawan Baik and Sumba Volunteer, conducted an extensive multi-day training program for over sixty volunteers under the #ZeroMalaria initiative. This training occurred at our medical-social base camp in Rumah Kambera, East Sumba.
Initiated, designed, and fully funded by the Fair Future Foundation, the #ZeroMalaria program is a vital, critical, and innovative public health initiative planned for long-term deployment. Facing an endemic situation of malaria in East Sumba, individual action alone won’t suffice. Collective efforts are imperative. We’ve rallied more than one hundred people across multiple teams responsible for early detection, information dissemination, rural community education, medical care, and necessary treatment.
Among our intervention methods is Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS). IRS involves spraying long-lasting insecticides on the interior walls and ceilings of homes, aiming to kill malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Additionally, we’ve launched a program to install insecticide-treated mosquito nets in every home.
The most vulnerable to this disease are young children, pregnant women, and the elderly. In our eyes, our volunteers are true modern-day heroes. Despite extreme conditions, they tirelessly work to protect these at-risk communities.
