Quick News – Water Connections reservoirs for rural communities
Across the rural villages of East Sumba, access to safe water remains one of the most serious public health challenges. The dry season can last up to nine months, forcing families, often women and children, to walk several kilometres each day to collect small amounts of water from unsafe sources. These conditions directly contribute to diarrhoeal diseases, parasitic infections, and poor hygiene.
Since the launch of the Water Connections programme, Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia have already built more than 80 ferro-cement reservoirs in remote communities. In 2026, we aim to construct at least 12 additional 5,300-litre rainwater harvesting systems equipped with simple filtration, helping families and schools store clean water during the rainy season and secure it throughout the long dry months.
This initiative directly supports healthier living conditions, strengthens community resilience to climate change, and reduces the burden of waterborne disease. To make this next phase possible, we are actively seeking partners and supporters willing to help expand sustainable access to clean water for rural communities in East Sumba.
