Laindatang Water Connections: A Revolution in Water Access to Transform the Lives of 600 Residents
From Education to Nutrition and Health: Our Story on the Radical Change in Laindatang Through Phases 2, 3, and the Start of Phase 4 of the #WaterConnections Project
The past four months have been intense work and remarkable progress for the Water Connections project in Laindatang, East Sumba. This project, which aims to provide clean water to an entire community, has reached the crucial milestones of phases 2 and 3 and is now entering phase 4. More than 600 people, including nearly 100 children attending Laindatang school, now benefit from clean water sources. Their lives have been transformed, and this change is only just beginning.
Access to clean water has a profound impact on every aspect of life in this community. The education and training days we organized for children and their parents were essential in promoting healthy living. We taught them how to prevent disease, improve their diet and use available resources efficiently. Our training materials, in particular the six posters that we have produced, are valuable tools in this educational process. With clean water, gardening becomes an accessible and productive activity. Growing your vegetables is no longer a distant dream but a daily reality for the residents of Laindatang. We not only teach them how to grow these vegetables but also how to cook them to maximize their nutritional benefits. These skills are crucial in the fight against malnutrition, which mainly affects children in this region.
The drilling work, carried out with unequal intensity and determination, lasted three months. Although we are not yet finished, we are getting closer to the goal. The water is there and ready to be distributed throughout the Laindatang region. Thanks to our collective efforts, drilling was carried out for the first time in this region’s history.
Access to clean water is the foundation of our fight against infectious diseases such as malaria, polio, dengue and tuberculosis. Without clean water, these diseases continue to spread and threaten the health and lives of the population. Thanks to Fair Future, the Laindatang community finally sees a glimmer of hope in this fierce struggle.
