Living in Laindatang is far from a fairy tale; it’s tough, harsh, and challenging. Clean water is a precious commodity here, but in 2023, we took the first step with the #WaterConnections Laindatang Phase #1 project. We’re gearing up for Phase #2 and #3 at the end of this month, and it’s crucial for the children and families in this ultra-rural village.
Laindatang, located in Indonesia, is grappling with a hidden crisis: a severe shortage of clean and accessible water. This daily struggle for survival hits the most vulnerable the hardest – children and women.
Daily, children in Laindatang embark on perilous journeys, walking miles to fetch water. Unfortunately, this water is often unfiltered and comes from contaminated sources, posing significant health risks. These risks affect their physical health and education, forcing many children to prioritize water over learning.
Women shoulder a disproportionate burden, spending hours fetching water, limiting self-care, family support, and educational opportunities. Unsafe water sources add physical strain and safety concerns. The problem is compounded as the water from rusted tin roofs further contaminates it. The lack of proper sanitation facilities worsens health risks, with no access to toilets or clean washing facilities.
Fair Future is offering hope through the #WaterConnections project. By drilling a deep well near the village school, we’re providing a sustainable and clean water source, symbolizing a lifeline for the entire village.
The impact is profound, especially for children and women. Easier access to clean water means regular school attendance for children. Women can redirect their time towards empowering activities, which could transform the village’s socio-economic landscape. The project also includes building water storage facilities to ensure a consistent, clean water supply, a significant step towards improving health and sanitation conditions.
