Learning What Belongs on the Plate
This new Photo of the Day shows a little boy from behind, his hand resting over an illustrated meal. At SDN Ndata in East Sumba, two of our long-standing local volunteers, Rambu Maris and Umbu Kenzi, guide the conversation. Here, healthy food education begins with a picture a child can explore and an explanation he can understand.
Healthy food education starts with familiar foods
Our two posters compare everyday food choices and show a food pyramid. Maize, tubers, leafy vegetables, fruit, beans, eggs, and fish offer ways to talk about energy, growth, and variety. We created these illustrations to bring nutrition closer to rural families, using foods they may grow or find locally. What is available still depends on the season, water, money, and access.
The price behind a choice
For families with very little money, a cheap packet of snacks or a sweet drink can be easier to buy than a varied meal. A red thumbs-down on a poster needs an explanation, not a judgment. We discuss foods high in sugar, salt or unhealthy fats, and practical, affordable alternatives. Children deserve to learn without being blamed for what their families can afford.
From the classroom to the garden
We have carried out this work for years through education, nutrition, child health, and Primary Medical Care. Healthy food education also needs practical support. Through Water Connections, we bring water and help establish vegetable gardens so that growing food becomes more feasible.
At SDN Ndata in 2026, this boy is discovering a different way to look at a plate. Our role is to make that knowledge useful beyond the classroom, alongside the water and resources families need.
