Picture of the Day: The Fight for Clean Water
This Photo of the Day exposes a grim reality often faced in ultra-rural areas: a local family’s only access to water for drinking, cooking, washing and survival depends on a makeshift system made of rusty corrugated iron sheets, an old Pertamina oil drum, a wooden branch and an upturned cup placed on top of a wooden pole.
This home, home to 12 residents, many of them children, relies entirely on this delicate system to collect and store water. A communal cup is used to drink directly from the source, although it is often stagnant, polluted and unsafe. Such contaminated water poses not only a challenge, but also a significant threat, causing diseases that have a profound impact on the health and well-being of entire families.
“Every drop of clean water means better health, dignity, and hope for families struggling to survive without this basic necessity.”– Alex Wettstein, CEO and Founder of Fair Future
The Fair Future Foundation has established the Water Connections programme to address the critical need for access to clean water. This initiative focuses on building rainwater tanks and filtered storage systems while providing vital social education on water safety. In addition, the Primary Medical Care program plays a crucial role in treating children and adults affected by diseases caused by unsafe water.
This image vividly reminds us of the challenges faced by countless families in this community. It highlights why waterborne diseases persist and underscores the need for sustainable solutions. By providing access to clean water and adequate medical care, we can stop the spread of disease, improve quality of life, and offer communities like this the opportunity for a healthier future.
These families deserve more than just survival: they deserve health, dignity, and the chance to thrive. Thank you very much for reading. Alex
