The major problem in East Sumba is the lack of water. This water issue causes health problems to the entire affected population, in particular food deficiencies, anemia, skin problems, infections, respiratory problems in children and vulnerable people.

This lack of water is linked, among other things, to the rupture of the containment dams, and consequently to the total drying up of the main irrigation canals. We share with you a short film of the destroyed dam.

Rebuilding it and others is a gigantic task, which requires substantial resources, but above all time. And it is precisely this time that is lacking because there are several thousand hectares of crops, rice fields that are no longer supplied with water, therefore these thousands of hectares of crops vital for the region, dry up and die!

In order to deal with the most urgent and after having distributed dozens of water tanks from 2,000 to 5,500 liters fully equipped, Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia have decided to give water access by drilling a deep borehole (50 m deep), including toilets, a place to wash, to take care of the kids, the family etc... This construction is dedicated to more than 250 people or nearly 40 families and it will start as soon as possible. A project that we hope to be able to duplicate many times -all together- as the needs are great.

Sumbas children are the 1st victims of the water and food crisis that follows the natural disaster of this early April. But also pregnant women, sick and the elderly.

@kawanbaikfoundation & @fairfuturefoundation does what it takes to help them but sometimes feels well a bit poor in front of the magnitude of the task.

Distribution of medical care, vitamins for children, food supplements too. So many people have vital needs they can no longer satisfy. Working to protect children, vulnerable people, families with aid to life and setting up long-term assistance requires time, attention.

Thats why Rumah Kambera now exists here.

Bridges were all or almost destroyed following the monstrous flooding at the beginning of April 21. This brave man is crossing the river, while crocodiles are everywhere here... While smoking!

Fair Future and @kawanbaikfoundation face huge tasks here in East Sumba... You can help us here: actionforfairfuture.org/sumba-disaster-21/

Good morning to everyone from Kambera, Rumah Kambera Fair Future Base camp in East Sumba.

For the Forgotten of Sumba, @FairFuturefoundation and @kawanbaikindonesia, gave free health & medical care to more than 250 people, the vast majority of whom were children: Malnutrition, amemias, respiratory problems, injuries, skin infections were the most common problems, the more frequently encountered here.

In a few days, we will repeat this kind of events. Free health & medical care will be organised, but we still lack lots of medicines, medical equipment, water, food, food supplements.

We believe that the worst is to come. Notably linked to the water which is now non-existent, to the loss of more than 4,000 hectares of rice-fields, crops. Let’s not turn a blind eye to what’s going to happen here.

We are the only NGO on the spot, I mean international, Kawan Baik and Fair Future are also the ones who manage what is the largest social camp in the whole province of East Sumba. It is a great citizen movement and the people who are here, very many of them to help us, are all victims of this disaster which hit Sumba East on April 4, Easter day 2021.

Dear friends, dear families,

It is part of our work there that needs to be done. Yes, Fair Future and Kawan Baik Foundations travel a lot, act a lot in order to respond in the most correct way possible to the immense needs of the population, of vulnerable people, including children, the elderly and pregnant women.

But before that, you have to study, take stock of the situation, define the problems and then assess the needs. This in the areas most affected by the disaster here in East Sumba and there are so many. An essential mapping task, fascinating if you want to be truly effective.

Some photos taken during our work yesterday April 19, 2021, in the region of Mauliru, Sumba East. We met people there who have great needs: To have access to consumable water, food, medical care, means of storage, enough to sleep, to have a roof to protect themselves too.

These tens of thousands of people went through hell and today they are trying to get by with so little money and far too little help.

This is where we work with Fair Future Foundation, Kawan baik Indonesia and all the people, good friends, who have joined us in what is now the biggest aid center in East Sumba: I'm talking about Rumah Kambera here. It's like in an anthill here, people run in all directions, busy preparing food donations, huge containers of medicine. People also come to bring donations of food, huge 2200 0r 5000 liter tanks so that we can install them in villages where there is no water at all. An incredible energy emanates from this magical and timeless place.

Thank you also to all of you who have donated to Fair Future, without you this would not be possible at all. You are all saving lives, and today we are planning for the long term, even the very long term because the most important problems are to come: Water, food, medical care, reconstruction, infrastructure, civil engineering.

Thank you so much for helping us. We need medicines, donation, medical supplies, food… Do not forget them!

The Fair Future Foundation team, direct from the biggest medical, social camp in East Sumba, at Rumah Kambera base camp.

Your can help us here, we all need you, they all need you: actionforfairfuture.org/sumba-disaster-21/
