This exhibit is a glimpse of life in the east, of life in rural areas of Sumba Timur. A representation of families' daily lives in remote regions, captured through young students' eyes, aged 9 to 12.
They open their houses to us, share their regular meals with us, invite us to follow them on the way to school, see their island and hills from morning until night. They capture those moments that punctuate their lives and explain them to us. Creating a story from these images is also an essential part of this exhibition and the curation process. Not only do they open their doors, but they also want to explain and tell us stories to guide the visual, in their own words. It's now up to us to listen.
From the remote region of Kahaungu Eti sub-district, in the eastern part of East Sumba district, Nusa Tanggara Timur, their villages are named Kamanggih and Matawai Katingga. Forty-eight children are the authors and artists of this exhibition called "Kabar Dari Timur" which translates to "News from the East". Through these photographs, audiences in Indonesia and worldwide can imagine and immerse themselves in a child's daily life in these regions.
Due to Covid-19 pandemic, cancellation of socio-cultural events and halt of learning and teaching activities in Indonesia, the exhibition had to be adjusted. Hence, it was adapted online, making accessible to a larger audience through smartphones, tablets or computers. It is hoped that this medium will make it possible to re-transpose the message of this series of photographs and stories as near as possible to reality.

Let's identify the problems and find good solutions.
We are always trying as Fair Future, with Kawan Baik Indonesia, to bring sustainable solutions to communities living in rural areas, improving their lives with good solutions related to access to basic medical care, health, education, drinking water and renewable energy sources
To do this, we use local resources for the villagers and local skills above all. We do not want to put in place solutions that they do not understand, that will produce waste or even things that are not good for their health and their cultures.
In this sense, the foundation wishes to find ways to use local resources as much as possible, to share our ideas in order to find new possibilities, those that will innovate the most, and may also be able to change the lives of those who will work with us here.
In this sense, we invite you all to collaborate with us here, whether you are from Sumba, or from anywhere else in Indonesia ... And all of you from around the world who would like to bring your know-how, to share solutions aimed at improving the conditions. of life of people here ... Simply learning to collaborate together for a better life.
First Aid Kit - Sumba, the hilly terrain of the island makes it beautiful but is also an obstacle in several sectors; first, it makes access to medical care very difficult. Second, the lack of trained medical personnel and adequate medical facilities.
For example, in one village named Bidipraing, the only “Puskesmas” (public health centre) they have is open only twice a month to provide basic care; the 8th day of the month for children, the 16th day for adults. And just like 1/4 of health centers in the world, they don't even have access to water.
We encountered many injured children during our daily work: dry skin, unhealthy growth on newborn babies, or any type of wounds, especially on the feet. Those wounds occurred because they walk barefoot most of the time, whether it is to play, or to go to school. These injuries go untreated, causing infections that lead to more serious medical problems later. Hygiene and lacking access to clean water are also the reason why most of the injuries left untreated.
Children are not the only ones concerned; teenagers and adults are also affected. For example, a young man from a neighbours village was injured in a motorcycle accident. He returned home with a swollen foot and open leg. His family could not do anything because they have no basic knowledge of first aid care, such as cleaning or disinfecting wounds. So, we intervened and treated him to avoid infection.
PS: In this photo, a little girl who badly burned her arm with boiling water, Mirna, 8 years old. Without the support of the Foundation, she would never have been able to heal. And today, she's very fine;-) ... See MoreSee Less
Learning to treat minor injuries not to become more serious injuries, raises the importance of awareness about first aid, before being taken to the hospital for professional doctors’ treatment
Today, the Swiss foundation faces significant challenges in terms of engagement in the field: Providing medical care, drinking water, light to study, build schools and improve solutions for access to knowledge, and primary care.
We are creating Rumah Kambera in this direction: To improve the living conditions of hundreds of thousands of families and children, living in rural areas of eastern Indonesia.
A huge thank you to everyone for your generosity, and we now join our hands in wishing you all a happy Christmas🎄 and a Happy New Year 2021.
At the end of 2019, strong winds knocked down the parallel classroom building of the Mbinudita school, the building flattened to the ground, books and all classrooms were wet. "Where will you go to school later?", said the children of Mbinudita sadly seeing the collapsed school picking up the rest of the books.
Kawan Baik Indonesia and Fair Future Foundation accompanied by the support of various partners from Archimetriz Bali, KP2S, Charis Sumba Foundation, working hand in hand to rebuild the school building. Parents of students, local residents, teachers, children also participate in the school construction process. Day, night, heat or rain did not dampen the enthusiasm in completing the school building process.
Now the school is here again, more beautiful, more solid than before. The wind and storms will no longer be able to tear it away, destroy it and the children of MbinuDita are safe.
Together, let's build schools, build villages, build the future like we rebuilt Mbinudita.
Life in these rural and ultra-peripheral regions is difficult!
We present to you a small summary of our activities during the last two weeks in Sumba East. In the most rural areas of Indonesia to meet the people who are our daily life. Families, children, simple people around the foundation's projects. Unique and true smiles.
For years, we have for mission to develop, support, and create humanitarian programs and actions linked to education, training, and medical care. - Rumah Kambera in few words, what is it?
A workplace, social center, an open door for all. A home for them, for us.
The foundation develops and implements actions in eastern Indonesia (NTT) and notably in East Sumba. To do so, we decided to coordinate our actions from a very simple little house in a village near Waingapu called Lambanapu.
Rumah Kambera is its name. This -home- will be a place of coordination of our socio-medical, educational activities in favor of children, women, and communities in rural and peripheral regions where access to water, electricity, education, or health care are almost non-existent.
A place where everyone will be welcome to offer a helping hand, to propose an aid project, or to collaborate with the volunteers and collaborators of the Foundation as part of their activities and programs. Additionally, it will also be a place of exchange, conferences, training, and workshops, a public garden, a place to experiment with what's working and what doesn't.
The foundation launches a fundraising campaign in this direction: Renovate the house using recycled materials, organise the first social activities and the development of this place.
Thank you very much for your help!

...Poverty is being hungry. Poverty is being homeless. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not being able to go to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, worrying about the future and living from day to day.
Hunger: When a plate of food means two days of income. A simple but nutritious, homemade meal, with homemade ingredients too, provides one-third of a person's daily caloric needs. This meal costsCHF. 1.20 in Switzerland, or 0.5% of average daily income. In the most rural areas where we work, that represents more than two days of income. As if a Swiss had to pay around CHF. 350 for that meal!
One thing is certain: Poverty is a complex social problem. No matter how you define it, you can agree that this is an issue that requires everyone's attention. It is important that all members of our society work together so that all have opportunities to realise their full potential. It is beneficial for everyone to help each other.
Help them fill their stomachs by offering us something to buy them something healthy, good too.
Good morning from Mbinudita, East Sumba to everyone,
It's an other bright day here, and we are working to make the school of #RebuildMbinuDita ready as soon as possible for the children's here.
Look at this beautiful school! Today we are waiting out architects, they are on their way from Bali, they will arrive around 5pm today on site here. Click and Dina from #archimetriz will give us some advices and help for the finition. We need to install electricity, rain water collection system and to move the huge orange 5'500 liter thank from it's temporary location the the definitive one.
Then, if raining, people from here will have some water. About the water, here, people are really struggling. No rain season, no water or very very few. Not enough to ensure an healthy life. This is actually the main topic when we talk with them: Water!
If anyone Is ready to help us, you're more than welcome. It's a survival question for the inhabitants of rurals areas of East Sumba. Water for life yes. Bit no water=No life.
Thank you for your time, your benevolence and interest.
...here we are, we still have things to do, time is running out. But imagine that this #RebuildMbinuDita project and the entire construction was carried out during this time of COVID-19 Pandemic. Also imagine that on August 15 2020, there was nothing here, just ruins! Imagine also and it is a touch of humor that sums up the following... that building this school here, it was for us like going to the Moon, a dream but nevertheless unimaginable and infeasible. But we did ... We "went to the moon!" And what's more, we're working on it now!
The dream became true for hundreds of little kids ages from 8 to 10! Their new School is almost rebuilt, after almost 3 months of full work on-site, there in East Sumba.
Look at how it's great and beautiful! An extraordinary human adventure, to be honest with you.
It was necessary to find the physical, moral, psychic resources also to go to the end of this marvellous realization in favour of the children and of all the community of this region masterfully poor.
Sumba is not easy, the needs are huge in terms of everything and we are here doing things simply but doing them ourselves thanks to all of you, having joy, happiness and passion. Because we know you with us all 24 hours a day here at #MbinuDita.
This project is not yet finished as there is still lots of needs you know, then you can help us here if you want to support the Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia to install more solar panels for example, to plants some three's, to buy school furniture for the kids there or starting a beautiful garden to help people there to have a bit more food.
Speechless! Hard to believe that less than two months ago, it was almost nothing here on the top of this hill here in East Sumba. It took us all, including the people of the region, to imagine, create, find solutions, make compromises… To get there today!
Hard to believe that less than two months ago, he had nothing here on the top of this hill here in East Sumba and look now! It’s for all of us unbelievable!
Here are some new photos of the construction dear friends. As you can see this is progressing well, but also relatively quickly given the remoteness and immense logistical issues we face with huge smiles every day! Some info on the "sudden death" of our 8'000W generator, an essential unit for us here! See what we can do when we’re all together! For each problem, there is a solution. Live picts from the #RebuildMbunuDita construction site here in East Sumba
A News from Kawan Elisa Wettstein, board member of the Swiss Fair Future Foundation. Elisa tells us about her stay on the #RebuildMbinuDita site in East-Sumba.
For two months now, we have been on-site living the day-to-day construction of the #RebuildMbinuDita school. As you can see, this school is quite amazing in its style unlike any other school in Sumba, if not even in Indonesia. The frame is made of steel, made up of hundreds of steel beams, thousands of screws and bolts.
This makes it flexible and resistant to earthquakes, storms and other natural disasters. 95% of the materials used were ordered from Java, more than 2,500 kilometres from MbinuDita. Most everything was shipped by container, using the sea route, two weeks journey from Surabaya to MbinuDita.
Live from the #RebuildMbinuDita site in East-Sumba, here are some photos of the construction of the school for children and the rural community of the region.
What is amazing about this #RebuildMbinuDita adventure is how children are involved every day working, to rebuild their future school.
Before, the school that collapsed was a bit like "the center of their world" you know! Those who live there in one of the most rural areas that can be found, school is simply "everything" for them! Really!
This short sequence shows the daughter of one of the #RebuildMbinuDita teachers. Her name is Mirna, she is 3 years old!
She and her mom are here with us almost every day of the week to help: Cooking for all of us, digging or moving rocks, bring tools, make coffee, bring water for cement talking and laughing all the time too etc... All these kids are incredible!
It's magic you know, I have never seen children who build their own school. It is like a game for them, it is also simply the absolute desire to take advantage of this unique place that will be the future school that the foundations (Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia) are offering and building in this very poor region of East-Sumba.
There, far from everything, where water, food and electricity are in short supply, too rare indeed!
Yesterday October 7, 2020, trucks came from Waingapu to deliver the equipment that we ordered from Surabaya (equipment that arrived the day before by a 100% filled container), in order to continue the construction of the #RebuildMbinuDita school. We joined the truck that was on the way to the project site with our drone, then followed it for a few minutes.
The foundation ordered more than 60 tonnes of material from Surabaya, which arrives by container after a few days of sea travel. Then an hour's journey by truck from Waingapu, to finally arrive on the #RebuildMbinuDita site. Logistically speaking, it is a very complex affair, it is an euphemism to say so!
Ambon, Arifin, Agus and Arif are coming from Surabaya (East-Java) to help the foundation to build the school, which we no longer have to name (#RebuildMbinuDita). Today, these four incredible Man share with us their perspective of this unique experience.
Without these four souls, we would not be where we are today, one month before the inauguration.
Ambon, Arifin, Agus and Arif. Coming from Surabaya to help us build this school. Today, they shared with us their perspective of this unique experience.
Good morning from East Sumba, form the #RebuildMbinuDita site,
How are you today? Its a bright morning isn't? We are on our way to the commercial port of Waingapu where we will receive and unload a full container of construction material for the new school of #RebuildMbinuDita.
We have to unload everything by hand because the container cannot go to the site in MbinuDita. Impossible, because there is no road made for it. So, from the container, in three trucks. It's not easy, but we have no choice.
Here are some photos taken yesterday October 5, 2020 from the #RebuildMbinuDita site. The work is progressing well as you can see.
There you go, your encouragement is our hot and sweet chocolate in the morning, so don't hesitate to share, comment. This is also how you can help us directly.
During the #RebuildMbinuDita , Kawan kawan from the @fairfuturefoundation and @kawanbaikindonesia live here. It's our temporary house made with the ruin's of the olds #SDMbinuDita school here in East Sumba.
We have everything or almost and it's so quiet as we are really super far from everything.
We call it "Mbinudita Indah", means "Pretty Mbinudita". This is our 7stars hotel.
Picture taken last night on the school rebuilding site in East Sumba. Working late to be ready for beginning of November. It's so important for the community here, and of course for all kids who need to back to school.
A huge project for us, very complicated logistically as we have no water, no electricity here. For electrical power, we use a 2000 Watt generator and for water, we have to order 5000 liter's every 3 days. Access road is also not simple, simply as their is no road! Just stone path, dust and the little asphalt that there was practically no longer exists at all.
At night we are working until 10 because it's so hot during the day, and the strong wind makes us totally dry. It's a so beautiful project, so useful also for hundreds of kids from Mbinudita. Just wonderful and we are all so glad to help this incredibly brave and good people here
We plan to finish the #rebuildmbinudita project at the end of October, beginning of November. To achieve this goal, all of us have to be there everyday. By the way, If you're interested to see the location of #RebuildMbinuDita click here:: maps.app.goo.gl/kf2yyG5KQcHpj7Ae6
Three is many way to help this kids and the entire community. We need water to build and to live on site, we need electricity and we need tools. Food for the dozens of locals volunteers how are on site to help us, or to cook for all of us. Energy, healthy food, drink enough, security and delay to terminate the project are our main priorities. Happiness to rebuild MbinuDita is the cherry on the top!
Hello Kawan's, how are you today? A bright and hot hello from Sumba from all of us to all of you,
This is Yaspan from #RebuildMbinuDita site here in East-Sumba. Yesterday, as every 3 days, we received 500 liters water for to build the school, but also to cook, to take shower etc... We all know how water is important right? The foundation needs water, a lot of water because we are a lot to live for several months there, in the middle of the hills very far from everything.
Yaspan and all the families of #Mbinudita suffer greatly from the lack of water. No one here has access to it, or at the cost of several hours of walking, sometimes on foot, sometimes on the backs of buffaloes.
So for him, even 5,000 liters that come out like that from this all-blue pipe, it's like a magic trick!

Sumba Photo Stories is a program initiated by Kawan Baik Indonesia and Fair Future Foundations. Collect factual information from the actors' subjective perspective, in this case, the 48 students, using the medium of photography and creating stories from it.
In their environment and through this social, cultural and educational program, the actors offer real perspectives of their life's quality, based on their authentic insight. The "Kabar dari Timur" exhibition has children as protagonists. Still, this program adapts to diverse target populations: women as its leads, a particular field of work or any other community or theme.
These programs' main objectives are learning new skills, such as photography and storytelling, writing improvement for both children and adults, and boost confidence whether to speak or to present the work done to an audience.
The resulting work, the photographies, are work of art in their own. They are also a factual basis analyzed for research work in the socio-cultural, educational or health fields.
This exhibition will be held until March 2021, via the website sumbaphotostories.com ... See MoreSee Less

Hello to all friends

Hello Kawan's,
...here we are, we still have things to do, time is running out.
Thank you to all of you.

Hello, Kawan's,
The dream became true for hundreds of little kids ages from 8 to 10!
Thank you very much and see you soon.

Hello Kawan's, how are you today?

Hello Kawan's,
What is amazing about this #RebuildMbinuDita adventure is how children are involved every day working, to rebuild their future school.

Hello form East-Sumba to all of you Kawan's,
Yesterday October 7, 2020, trucks came from Waingapu to deliver the equipment that we ordered from Surabaya (equipment that arrived the day before by a 100% filled container), in order to continue the construction of the #RebuildMbinuDita school.
Wish you all an amazing day Kawan's.

Hi wan's, how's life today?
We are #RebuildMbinuDita you know?
Thank you so much and see you soon here
