In Anda Monung, Desiana and Ester provide essential healthcare in areas lacking roads, clinics, and power.
These two Kawan Sehat agents are the only frontline health providers in one of East Sumba’s most challenging areas to reach.
In the far reaches of East Sumba, Anda Monung is a place few can reach. Arriving takes six hours of rugged travel, including narrow paths and steep inclines. No road connects this village to any medical center. There is no electricity, and water is scarce. And yet, in this isolation, healthcare thrives—because two women made it so.
Desiana Ata Hau and Ester Niwa Lepir are Kawan Sehat health agents trained by Fair Future and Kawan Baik Foundations. They are not doctors, but they are the first—and often the only—response when illness strikes. Their work includes treating infected wounds, managing high fevers, cleaning injuries, and calming frightened parents. Every week, they respond to dozens of cases that would otherwise go untreated.
When Erwin, Fair Future’s MediRider, visits, he doesn’t just deliver medicine; he strengthens the system. Together, they take stock of supplies, introduce new treatments, and discuss each patient’s case with care. Their medical backpacks, lightweight and made from recycled fabric, are packed with essentials: antibiotics, antiseptics, oral rehydration salts, and reusable health posters. These posters, carried house to house, teach families how to prevent disease through handwashing and clean living.
In places like Anda Monung, education is as critical as medicine. That’s why Desiana and Ester are more than health agents—they are educators, advocates, and trusted pillars of their community. People listen to them because they’ve earned trust, one visit at a time.
The impact is measurable: fewer untreated infections, lower child mortality, and stronger basic health knowledge. And it’s all powered by commitment, perseverance, and two women who said yes when others said it wasn’t possible.
