Katrina delivers healthcare, nutrition education, and daily resilience in the water-scarce Lapinu village.
In Lapinu, Katrina and Erwin work to strengthen health, hygiene, and nutrition despite the extreme scarcity.
In Lapinu, East Sumba, scarcity shapes every aspect of life, particularly access to clean water. Each day, Katrina, a dedicated Kawan Sehat Health Agent, walks long distances carrying heavy jerrycans to meet her family’s basic needs. Yet, despite these challenges, she treats dozens of patients every month, promoting resilience and health in a village where basic necessities are scarce. Today, Erwin, the coordinator of the Primary Medical Care program, visits Katrina to provide logistical and moral support. Meeting at a small church near Katrina’s home, they review the community’s health situation, address medical concerns, and plan future care strategies.
Erwin restocks Katrina’s medical backpack, which contains over 100 critical items: antiseptics, fever reducers, wound dressings, and other essential supplies for treating infections, minor injuries, and common illnesses. They also ensure the smooth functionality of the Kawan Sehat mobile app, used to track patient data, supply needs, and care reports. Beyond clinical care, Katrina plays a leading role in health education. Using washable fabric health posters created by Fair Future and Kawan Baik, she teaches children about hygiene practices such as handwashing with soap—an essential habit in preventing disease.
Katrina also leads cooking workshops, demonstrating how to create balanced meals with local vegetables and proteins. These workshops are crucial: in a community where malnutrition is widespread, good nutrition education directly strengthens the immune system and reduces the risk of disease. Katrina represents more than health assistance; she embodies resilience, leadership, and hope. Supported by Fair Future and Kawan Baik, her work in Lapinu stands as a model of how sustainable, community-driven healthcare can transform even the most difficult living conditions into opportunities for better futures.
