Kawan Sehat Training Days Strengthen Primary Medical Care in Remote Rural Indonesia
Health agents acquire essential skills to provide care in villages without access to doctors.
For three transformative days, 21 Kawan Sehat health agentsโ20 women and one manโgathered in May 2025 to improve their skills in primary medical care. Guided by doctors and nurses under the coordination of the Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia, they engaged in practical training, medical protocols, and community health education. These sessions represent 16 years of dedication from both foundations to enhancing healthcare in ultra-rural areas.
These men and women are the lifeline in remote corners of Indonesia where access to medical resources is limited. In villages untouched by doctors, Kawan Sehat agents deliver essential careโtreating wounds, managing infections, measuring blood pressure, preventing malaria, and educating families on hygiene and nutrition. Together, they now serve nearly 1,000 patients each month.
Over recent years, their knowledge has grown substantially. Using training manuals, medical guides, and our field application, Kawan Sehat records every patient’s social, medical, and environmental data. This information not only supports treatment but also integrates into national health databases, making their work a vital part of broader public health strategies.
During these enriching training sessions, the health agents learned how to handle emergencies, prevent infectious diseases, and make judicious use of the limited medicines available. They trained with real medical tools, worked through actual case studies, and shared their routine challenges. For many, these workshops provide a rare chance to learn directly from medical expertsโknowledge that is crucial for their isolated communities, where poverty increases the risk of illness.
Their dedication is extraordinary, yet the programme remains fragile. Medicine supplies are running low, and funding often falls short. Despite these challenges, the agents continue their mission, saving lives every day with unwavering courage and resilience.
