Ester and Erwin: Caring for children, preventing malaria, and educating families in Ngadulonggi.
Kawan Sehat’s work in Ngadu Langgi provides medicine, education, and malaria screening to children in need.
In Ngadu Langgi, East Sumba, the scarcity of accessible healthcare poses a grave concern. However, since 2022, the Primary Medical Care Program, spearheaded by Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia, has actively addressed this deficiency by delivering essential care to families and children residing in ultra-remote villages. As part of this commendable initiative, Erwin travels for hours to visit Ester, a dedicated Kawan Sehat health agent who serves her community with devotion.
During his visit, Erwin restocks Esther’s medical backpack with over 100 essential items, including medications addressing fever, wounds, skin infections, digestive issues, and symptoms associated with malaria. The selection of these supplies is critical, as they empower Ester to manage common conditions. Without timely intervention, these can escalate into life-threatening health crises. This intervention is particularly vital in regions like East Sumba, where endemic diseases such as malaria pose ongoing health threats. Early detection and treatment, facilitated by tools like Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) for malaria, are crucial in preventing severe complications and promoting swift recovery.
Erwin and Ester’s collaboration extends beyond mere medical provision. They meticulously review medical documentation and discuss patient histories, ensuring precise tracking and enhancing the effectiveness of care strategies. Ester’s role transcends that of a health worker—she functions as an educator. Utilising the Kawan Sehat health book and durable, washable fabric posters, she imparts knowledge about hygiene, malaria prevention, and healthy eating habits to village children. This preventive education is paramount in fostering healthier behaviours and diminishing disease burdens.
Ester conducts malaria screening tests on children during this visit. In regions plagued by endemic diseases, early detection and immediate intervention are vital in safeguarding children and expediting their recovery.
The synergy between Erwin and Ester exemplifies a broader movement aimed at preventing any child from being overlooked. Through direct care, comprehensive education, and consistent presence, Kawan Sehat is effecting tangible change. This approach ensures that communities neglected by conventional healthcare systems receive the care they deserve, impacting lives quietly, consistently, and effectively.
