Preparing for SolarBuddy QC at Rumah Kambera with manuals, labels, and teamwork to illuminate East Sumba
Volunteers, education leaders, and medical staff come together to prepare 2,224 solar lamps for rural villages and schools.
At Rumah Kambera, a flurry of activity laid the groundwork for a vital task: preparing for the quality control (QC) of 2 2,224 SolarBuddy lamps destined for East Sumba’s most remote villages and schools. It’s a process that blends exact technical standards with a profoundly human purpose—to ensure every lamp is ready to transform lives.
Manuals spread across long tables as the team, including medical staff, reviewed every detail. From testing light intensity to checking battery charge cycles and assessing solar panel performance, no aspect of lamp functionality was overlooked. Even the medical team engaged fully, learning the technical aspects of QC because in East Sumba, light is’ only about visibility—it’s about health, safety, and opportunity.
Suzan carefully designed new quality control labels, translating technical documents into clear, accessible instructions in Bahasa Indonesia. This guarantees that every lamp and its recipient —be it a child or a school —receives proper guidance and support.
Volunteers gathered keenly, listening to ErErwin’s enthusiastic briefings. His message was clear: every step counts, because each lamp will enable a child to study after dark, families to cook safely without the danger of flames, and villages to live more securely and with dignity. As Ino and his team practised using both the standard SolarBuddy and the Student lamp model—which can light entire classrooms—the sense of purpose became even more evident.
Meanwhile, preparations continued to welcome 24 school principals and the head of East Sumba’s education department. These leaders would soon discover how the lamps could revolutionise local education by extending school days beyond sunset.
Tables at Rumah Kambera brimmed with yellow boxes, custom labels, and QC checklists, while coffee and laughter flowed amid moments of focused concentration. This wasn’t merely logistics; it was a moment where precision and community spirit intertwined.
The QC team knows that beyond every lamp’s circuits and solar panels lies the power to change the futures of thousands of children. It’s a task rooted in science and compassion, demonstrating once again that light can be both technical and profoundly human.
