A Purpose-Built Depot Prepares SolarBuddy Lamps for Distribution to Remote Villages in East Sumba.
This storage facility was constructed for light, security, and effective humanitarian coordination.
At Rumah Kambera, an initiative by Fair Future and Kawan Baik Indonesia has taken root—a purpose-built storage facility designed to protect and organise 2,224 SolarBuddy lamps, which are crucial for villages without electricity. What began as a basic shelter has transformed into a sophisticated depot, constructed entirely on-site by Fair Future, with support from Rotary International.
The newly redesigned facility incorporates a robust metal frame, reinforced walls, and a weather-resistant roof, all critical for withstanding adverse weather conditions. A pivotal design feature is the optimised airflow system, which is vital for preventing humidity-related damage and ensuring the longevity of the lamps. An organised array of bright yellow boxes houses the lamps, each meticulously checked, labelled, and registered by our dedicated team. Each box signifies the promise of safer, healthier nights for children and families in East Sumba.
These lamps are destined to illuminate homes and schools in 26 remote villages, but before deployment, each unit is logged into our custom-built SolarBuddy Tracker app. This innovative digital tool enables accurate distribution, detailed usage monitoring, and comprehensive long-term impact reporting, ensuring accountability and maximised effectiveness for each device.
This facility represents much more than a storage space—it signifies a landmark in Fair Future’s logistics. It resonates with intentionality, sustainability, and the significance of local craftsmanship. The walls embody the collective efforts of builders, planners, donors, and volunteers.
It is essential to recognise the broader impact of such initiatives. According to the International Energy Agency, over one billion people live without electricity globally. Innovations like SolarBuddy lamps provide them with light and improved health outcomes by reducing harmful emissions from traditional fuel sources. Please have a look at this map we developed here.
With gratitude to Rotary International, Solar Buddy Foundation, Kawan Baik Indonesia, and everyone involved, the lamps are ready for their mission. Because where there’s no light, there’s a resolve for change and action.
