Picture of the Day: Sharing Laughter and Learning With the Kawan Sehat Book
This new “Picture of the Day” beautifully captures a moment of laughter and connection as women from rural villages in eastern Indonesia gather around the Kawan Sehat Book, a guide to healthy living. Created by Fair Future and Kawan Baik Foundations two years ago, this invaluable resource has been widely distributed to ultra-rural villages and schools in East Sumba.
The Kawan Sehat book aims to educate children and adults. Teachers use it as a tool to teach young children how to protect themselves from common health problems. Parents and caregivers gain knowledge about practical habits for leading healthier lives, such as proper washing techniques, dental care, keeping nails and hair clean, and maintaining a hygienic home environment. The book also covers important health topics such as avoiding secondhand smoke, preventing lice infestations, and avoiding harmful cleaning practices such as using detergent for personal grooming.
The Kawan Sehat book goes beyond health education; it serves as a gateway to improved living, shared happiness, and more resilient communities.— Alex Wettstein, CEO and Founder of Fair Future
For our teams on the ground, distributing the Kawan Sehat book is an opportunity to directly engage with communities rather than simply handing out a resource. These sessions create opportunities to discuss practical health habits and empower women and families to take charge of their well-being. The book features three engaging characters who bring these lessons to life, providing clear and engaging advice that resonates with people of all ages: Rambu (Brother), Umbu (Sister) and Njara (the horse)
The Kawan Sehat book is a dynamic resource, revised with new content twice a year to adapt to changing health priorities and community needs. It serves as an essential tool for Kawan Sehat health workers in the Primary Medical Care program, providing them with the information and materials they need to educate and support families, even in remote areas.
This new photo illustrates the transformative power of education and connection. Through shared laughter and learning, these women not only gain knowledge but also create healthier futures for their families and communities.
