Two reclaimed banners become a screen as solar power gathers in the village
This new Picture of the Day captures a transformative night in Mbajik, one that resonates deeply with everyone who attended. In an effort led by the joint initiatives of Fair Future and Kawan Baik Indonesia, two weathered plastic banners were stretched tight to form a makeshift screen, measuring two metres by two. A dusty projector was switched on, thanks to the school’s innovative new solar system, consisting of 16 panels on the roof, a 14 kWh battery, and a 5 kW hybrid inverter. This ensured consistent illumination even after the sun set.
The school’s yard quickly filled with excited children, curious parents, eager teachers, and supportive neighbours. For all of them, this was their very first encounter with cinema. The evening began with short films showcasing the collaborative work we continue to undertake. These were followed by an Indonesian story of a destitute village restoring a worn wooden bridge, symbolising their connection to the wider world. The story unfolded on-screen, reflecting their own community’s struggles, prompting children to lean in and adults to nod in agreement.
Electricity, much like the bridge, acts as a conduit for progress. It transforms classrooms into evening learning hubs, powers pumps to deliver clean water, preserves vaccines at optimal temperatures, and keeps the community connected worldwide. Before the arrival of solar power, life here generally ended by six. Yet, on this particular night, over fifty people gathered to witness a new dawn. A spontaneous discussion ensued as people contemplated the next steps.
Although the screen might have been makeshift, the emotions it inspired were genuine. This was not just a film night, but a celebration of Mbajik’s achievements with the support of our foundations. The evening’s impact on the children was profound, sparking new questions and curiosities. At its core, the night conveyed a clear truth: progress is not miraculous. It results from effort, cooperation, and shared resources — a simple yet powerful story of a community choosing to empower one another through stories and electricity.
