Rumah Kambera
A permanent community socio-medical centre in Kawangu, built to strengthen care, medicine supply and field logistics across East Sumba.
- A field base since 2019
- 4,200 m² site in Kawangu
- Phase 1 is the next construction stage
A permanent place for care that must keep moving
Rumah Kambera is where programmes meet reality. Medicines are prepared here. Health agents train here. Vehicles leave for villages from here. Water and solar equipment are stored, repaired and sent into the field from here.
The rented base used since 2019 can no longer safely carry the scale of this work. On foundation-owned land in Kawangu, the future Rumah Kambera Community Socio-Medical Centre is being developed as a permanent operational base for community care, medicine supply, diagnostics and field logistics.

The programme
The place where separate programmes become one health system
Safe care in a remote district depends on more than a consultation. It depends on medicines that can be stored correctly, basic diagnostics, prepared teams, reliable logistics and a base able to continue through heat, rain and distance.
Rumah Kambera has operated as Fair Future and Kawan Baik Indonesia’s field base since 2019. It connects Primary Medical Care, Kawan Sehat agents, Water Connections, solar and electrification, prevention, research, emergency response and community activity.
Phase 1 is deliberately focused on the operational core. It is planned to include a pharmacy, a small laboratory, clinical space, medical storage, field-logistics areas, parking and sanitation. The workshop, expanded training areas and additional technical or community spaces belong to later phases as funding allows.
The centre will not replace hospitals or public health centres. It will make community care, preparation and referral safer, better supplied and easier to sustain.

From site to service
A permanent centre built in useful phases
The project is being delivered step by step so that the first building can become operational without waiting for the whole centre to be completed.
Secure the ground
The foundation-owned site is surveyed and organised around access, drainage, existing conditions and East Sumba’s climate.
Establish essentials
Water, electricity, site preparation and a safe perimeter make construction and future daily work possible.
Build Phase 1
The first building is planned around clinical space, a secure pharmacy, a small laboratory, medical storage, field logistics, parking and sanitation.
Put the core to work
Medicines, diagnostics, stock systems, patient follow-up and mission preparation can begin from a permanent operational base.
Expand later
The workshop, expanded training areas and additional technical and community spaces can follow as financing allows.
Infrastructure is part of care
A stronger base, with clear clinical boundaries
Rumah Kambera will strengthen the first links in the care pathway: preparation, prevention, safe storage, early assessment, training, documentation and referral. It is designed to support formal services, not imitate or replace them.
What the centre can support
- Prepare medical outreach and appropriate first-line community care
- Store medicines and supplies in secure, traceable conditions
- Support defined basic diagnostics and water-quality analysis
- Train Kawan Sehat agents through practical sessions and case review
- Provide health education, community meetings and coordinated follow-up
- Prepare records, supplies and transport before teams leave for remote villages
What still requires formal services
- Emergency stabilisation, ambulance pathways and hospital admission
- Specialist diagnosis and treatment beyond the team’s competence
- Surgery, inpatient care and advanced laboratory investigation
- Government vaccination services and statutory disease surveillance
- Management of severe or uncertain illness requiring a higher level of care
- Referral decisions that must remain under qualified medical responsibility

Inside Phase 1
A compact clinical and logistics core first
The first building is not the whole future centre. It is the operational core we hope to start first, with the spaces needed to keep medicines, basic diagnostics, clinical work and field missions organised in one place.
See the materials and technical choices being prepared for Building 1, including floor tiles, paint colours, doors and windows.
Clinical space
A small care area for appropriate assessment, follow-up and preparation before referral when needed.
Pharmacy & laboratory
Secure medicine storage alongside a small laboratory for defined basic diagnostic and analytical work.
Medical storage & logistics
Protected supplies, stock preparation and field-logistics space for teams leaving for remote communities.
Parking & sanitation
Practical access, loading space and safe sanitation are part of making the building usable every day.
Later phases: the workshop, expanded training areas and additional technical or community spaces will be developed as funding allows.
What changes in practice
The centre will turn distance into organised readiness
Medicines ready before departure
Secure storage, stock records and dedicated preparation space will reduce avoidable shortages, losses and rushed field departures.
Training becomes continuous
Kawan Sehat agents and local teams will have a permanent place to practise protocols, review cases and strengthen clinical judgement.
Water and health evidence meet
A small laboratory will help analyse water quality and connect technical infrastructure with infection prevention and measured health risk.
Local work builds lasting capacity
Local masons, carpenters, technicians, drivers, trainers, suppliers and health workers contribute skills that remain useful beyond construction.

Latest Rumah Kambera reports
These reports document fundraising, construction, water, technical studies, local work and the programmes preparing to operate from the future centre.
Handwashing at Rumah Kambera Starts with Careful Planning
Rotary Australia, the Rotary Club of Mandurah Districts and John Kevan support planned handwashing facilities at the new Rumah Kambera. Accessible basins and hygiene education will serve children and adults. Installation is planned for 2027, with locations, plumbing and costs still to define.
50 Truckloads of Sirtu Now on Site at Rumah Kambera
Fifty of 100 planned truckloads of sirtu have reached Rumah Kambera. Working from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., the team receives 25 loads daily. Two more days are expected at that pace. We will then assess whether more material is needed before levelling the 100 piles to make the surface as flat as possible.
Rumah Kambera’s Boundary Wall Is Complete
Rumah Kambera’s boundary wall is complete after nearly two and a half months, including construction of the central wooden lopo. Northeast levelling is planned next, with around 100 truckloads of sirtu to raise about 20% of the 4,200 m² plot by 50–60 cm for the future medical centre.
From Plans to Materials at Rumah Kambera
An architectural rendering of Building 1 at Rumah Kambera accompanies the internal construction document now defining floor tiles, paint colours, doors and windows for the medical and workshop areas. Some details remain to be confirmed before work moves from drawings to construction.
The Final Wall at Rumah Kambera
Work on the final side of the Rumah Kambera boundary wall is under way in Kawangu, East Sumba. The walls are expected to be complete next week. Then sirtu, a mix of sand and stone, will be spread and compacted to level the sloping north-eastern site before construction begins at the centre.
A Website for the Future Rumah Kambera Centre
A dedicated website now follows the planned Rumah Kambera Community Socio-Medical Centre in East Sumba. The architectural rendering shows the proposal, while the new microsite explains the centre’s purpose, plans and construction progress. Follow the work as each stage takes shape.
Electricity Reaches the Rumah Kambera Site
Electricity reached the future Rumah Kambera Community Socio-Medical Centre site in Kawangu, East Sumba, a few weeks ago. Its current 2,200-watt connection supports basic construction tasks and provides evening light in the lopo when the team stays overnight on the land during the build.
Rumah Kambera | CHF 19,000 for the Future Centre
Two donations totalling CHF 19,000 bring funding for the future Rumah Kambera Community Socio-Medical Centre to nearly 40% of the total needed. In Kawangu, East Sumba, construction is under way on a site planned for medical care, training and logistics serving remote village communities.
Kawangu topographic survey | Building from measured ground
A topographic survey has been completed at the future FFF-KBI Sumba HQ site in Kawangu. Elevations, contours, roads, drainage and existing features were measured and mapped at 1 to 1000 scale, giving the project a reliable technical base before the next construction phase begins on site.
Rumah Kambera 2.0 Drilling Begins | Fair Future
Rumah Kambera 2.0 drilling marks the first physical step toward Fair Future Foundation’s new socio-medical base in East Sumba. After two days of work, fresh water was found, making future construction, field life, and patient care possible on the site.
Socio-Medical Base Concept 2026 Released in Sumba
The Sumba HQ Concept 2026 marks a decisive step forward. Rumah Kambera can no longer sustain our medical and social operations. Too small, structurally exhausted, and limiting our impact. With land secured in Kawangu, this new socio medical base is designed to strengthen healthcare access and long term field presence in East Sumba.
Warehouse Expansion to Boost Medical Supplies and Labs
We’re expanding our warehouse at Rumah Kambera! Initially, it will store medical supplies and 2,200 SolarBuddy lamps from Rotary and SolarBuddy. In 2025, it will also host a small laboratory project. Click here to view the plans and see how this new facility will support our mission. Thank you!
Fundraising and accountability
A centre is only credible when the work remains visible
We publish construction stages, technical studies, field use and funding milestones as the project moves forward. Because funding changes as new support arrives, the dedicated Rumah Kambera website now carries the current project record rather than fixing a percentage here that quickly becomes outdated.
The completed boundary wall at Rumah Kambera marks a documented stage in preparing the site for the future centre.
