In the scattered hills of East Sumba, 5,300-litre ferrocement tanks collect each drop of rain. Families help build and maintain them. Children drink safely, and women no longer have to carry 20-kilo jerrycans for hours. Water near the house is a primary source of health care.
In remote villages without electricity, children must deal with daily darkness. Fair Future and Rotary International’s Solar Buddy program offers solar-powered lights to change that reality. These lights allow children to study after dark, navigate their surroundings safely, and help their families at home. More than just a source of light, these lights promote education, safety, and respect.

At Rumah Kambera we checked 2,224 SolarBuddy lamps East Sumba one by one. Volunteers, Rotary, Fair Future and Kawan Baik tested brightness, panels, switches and batteries, fixed faults, logged QR codes, and packed each unit for long journeys to schools with no electricity. Light prevents injuries, improves study, and protects health.

Over two focused days at Rumah Kambera, volunteers and Rotary members tested, repaired, labeled, and registered 2,224 SolarBuddy lamps so children and schools in East Sumba can study safely without toxic kerosene and darkness.
The 2,224 SolarBuddy lamps have arrived at our base in Rumakambera after six months of challenges. These lamps will transform lives, offering safe lighting, improving education, and aiding medical care in villages without electricity.
A shipping delay has pushed back the arrival of 2,224 SolarBuddy lamps in East Sumba by around 15 days. This setback disrupts our plans—but it won’t stop us. We adapt, reschedule, and continue to fight for those without light, electricity, or access to healthcare. We will be ready by June 10th.
A five-month humanitarian mission begins in Sumba, bringing medical care, water access, and solar energy to isolated communities. Fair Future is delivering 3 tons of supplies, launching a malaria study, and building vital infrastructure to improve lives where help is most needed.
In East Sumba, nearly 12,000 students face the challenge of studying without electricity. Through Light Up the Future, Fair Future Foundation is distributing 2,224 solar lamps to over 2,000 children in 24 remote schools, bringing safe, renewable light to improve education, health, and daily life.
Fantastic news! We’ve officially secured tax-free approval for importing 2,224 SolarBuddy lamps from Australia. This historic milestone makes Fair Future the first NGO to achieve duty-free humanitarian imports in Indonesia. These lamps will soon light up villages in East Sumba. The lack of electricity forces children to embark on lengthy journeys to school at dawn, individuals cook under perilous conditions, and nighttime study becomes a significant challenge. Solar lighting provides a safe and sustainable remedy that enhances education, health, and security for these communities.
We’re close to finalizing the import of 2,224 SolarBuddy lamps from Australia to Indonesia—an unprecedented effort to bring light to children in East Sumba. After three months, 15+ meetings, and countless letters, we now await the final approval in Jakarta on Feb 3. This milestone will pave the way for future tax-free humanitarian imports.
