Kawan Against Malaria enables rural health agents to protect their communities. We deliver rapid tests, mosquito nets, and health education where malaria is endemic—ensuring early treatment and fewer infections.
After years of walking to find dirty water, villages like Laindatang, Hambarita or Mbinudita can now access clean water from community reservoirs they built themselves. Clean water reduces diarrhea, skin infections, and fear. This is a true reflection of dignity in daily life.

KAWAN AGAINST MALARIA - HOW IS FAIR FUTURE FIGHTING MALARIA IN EAST SUMBA?
The Kawan Against Malaria program (formerly Zero Malaria) works to drastically reduce malaria cases in ultra rural areas. With local health authorities and Kawan Sehat agents, we diagnose and treat patients, distribute long lasting bed nets, spray houses, monitor data, and teach families how to protect themselves. This prevents severe anemia, dangerous fevers, and deaths especially among children and pregnant women.
The Kawan Against Malaria category of Fair Future Foundation focuses on our dedicated efforts to fight malaria in ultra-rural Indonesia. These stories showcase how we provide mosquito nets, conduct education campaigns, and strengthen community-based malaria prevention and treatment. Through partnerships and local collaboration, we bring life-saving solutions to areas most affected by malaria, helping protect families and reduce disease.
Kawan Against Malaria
What Is Malaria and How to Prevent It
Malaria enters silently and can kill within days. But it’s preventable. Learn what malaria is, how it spreads, who is most at risk, and how Fair Future acts daily to stop this disease before it strikes.

Malaria Crisis in Umalulu: A Structural Emergency
In Umalulu, nearly all children at a six-class primary school have already had malaria. With infection rates over 50% and national health budgets slashed, we’re launching an urgent study to understand and combat this deadly disease. Our goal: real, scalable solutions for one of Indonesia’s most affected regions.
Massive Humanitarian Mission Begins in East Indonesia
[…] East Java from Banyuwangi is an adventure in itself. Then, a three-day ferry journey with stops in Lombok before finally reaching Waingapu, Sumba. From there, it’s off to Rumah Kambera, our socio-medical base camp. We make this trip 3 to 4 times a year, sometimes with the Truck of Life, but we’re using the Truck N’ Load this time. And After That? A whole new adventure begins. There’s work to do, a packed schedule, and massive challenges ahead: Building a new storage facility—a critical space for medical supplies and 2,224 SolarBuddy lamps that will bring light to thousands of children without electricity. Constructing seven ferrocement water reservoirs (5,000 liters each) will finally provide clean water to all the villages in the Mbatakapidu region. Coordinating our biggest water project yet—a 110 m³ water reservoir with a rainwater collection system. Yes, 110 m³! This building is a “première” for Fair Future—a massive regional project without water, roads, or electricity. But we’re used to these conditions. Delivering medical care, water access, and solar energy to isolated communities in Sumba. And then comes an even more significant challenge: An even more significant challenge is the study of malaria on a large scale. For a month, […]
Fair Future Distributes Long-Lasting Mosquito Nets
We’re purchasing over 300 long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) to protect families from malaria in Umalulu and beyond. These high-quality, extra-resistant nets last over 5 years and are a crucial tool in our #ZeroMalaria program. Costing nearly $20 each, they are a major investment in health and prevention.
Malaria Study in Umalulu for Urgent Health Solutions
Extract and Description of this News: – Thank you for your interest. Fighting Malaria in Umalulu: A Critical Study for a Healthier Future Understanding and Fighting Malaria in One of Indonesia’s Most Affected Regions Conducting malaria research in Umalulu to develop urgent health solutions for affected communities. Hello, everyone. It’s Alex. Malaria remains one of the most pressing health challenges in East Sumba, particularly in the remote area of Umalulu. Without access to electricity, clean water, or basic healthcare facilities, residents of Umalulu face alarming rates of malaria infections throughout the year. This study, funded by RAM, an international malaria control organization with CHF 5,000, aims to assess the severity of the situation and lay the foundations for an effective response. Umalulu is one of the poorest and most remote areas in East Sumba. Access to the area is complex, requiring off-road vehicles or motorbikes to navigate its rugged terrain. The lack of reliable data on malaria prevalence makes a thorough field study even more crucial. Before launching a large-scale intervention, we need to understand the scale of the problem, the contributing factors, and the population’s immediate needs. Our local and Swiss teams, which include local health workers, will collect […]
Fair Future Launches New Malaria Research Project
Fair Future is allocating nearly 90M IDR (4,900 CHF) to study malaria in East Sumba, one of the most infected regions. This research will assess needs, understand disease spread, and involve communities in finding the best solutions. An essential step in the fight against this deadly disease. #ZeroMalaria
Local Impact: Fighting Malaria with Prevention and Care
The Fair Future Foundation and Rotary International have launched the Zero Malaria Program to combat malaria in remote Indonesian regions. Our efforts include distributing insecticide-treated nets, conducting rapid diagnostic tests, and educating families on disease prevention. Each action taken is a step towards saving lives and creating better futures for everyone involved!
