Patient Cases Treated and Cared for by Kawan Sehat Workers
They change hundreds of lives every month through compassionate healthcare
Empowering Health in the Heart of Rural Communities | In the remote villages of eastern Indonesia, where electricity and clean water are scarce, access to healthcare is often out of reach. The remarkable women known as Kawan Sehat health workers are profoundly changing this situation. Through their commitment and expertise, they provide Primary Medical Care to people who would otherwise have to walk for hours or even days to reach a medical facility.
This collection of nearly 100 images, taken by the health workers using their mobile phones and the Kawan Sehat app we developed, highlights the significant impact of their work. The photos capture real-life situations ranging from wound care to treating infections and diseases, providing clear insight into the life-saving services they offer. Each image shows their extraordinary ability to adapt and provide essential healthcare in areas lacking basic infrastructure.
These women care for between 500 and 800 patients each month, addressing issues from chronic illnesses to urgent medical needs. Their efforts go beyond simply managing symptoms; they play a crucial role in saving lives and strengthening communities as a whole. Supported by Fair Future and Kawan Baik Indonesia, these caregivers receive intensive hands-on training using, among other things, a medical book we created that is 100% tailored to their specific challenges. This “medical bible” offers guidance on diagnostics, treatment options, and community education, enabling them to effectively address various health situations.
Operating in areas that are only accessible by foot or scooter, these workers tackle the most challenging terrain to provide services beyond what the healthcare system can offer. Their dedication is supported by continuous communication via a dedicated WhatsApp group, where cases are discussed, healthcare professionals answer questions, and advice is provided instantly.
Kawan Sehat’s health workers are more than just caregivers: they are the backbone of their communities, connecting people to essential health services and alleviating isolation. Fair Future is developing sustainable healthcare solutions for often-neglected villages through this initiative, ensuring everyone receives the care they need.
