Ensuring Water Safety: How Fair Future Conducts Testing and Education to Maintain Clean, Life-Sustaining Water in East Sumba
In addition to providing access, we empower rural communities by offering water quality education and easy testing methods, ensuring ongoing safety and promoting health.
Gaining access to clean water marks only the beginning of our Water Connections initiative; maintaining its safety for consumption is just as crucial. In East Sumba, one of the most remote areas we serve, many villagers depend on natural sources such as “Kulup“—hand-dug rock cavities that gather rainwater. Although these sources may seem pristine, they often hide dangerous contaminants that can pose significant health risks.
Our mission extends beyond simply installing wells and reservoirs. We are committed to conducting thorough water quality assessments using simple yet effective field tests. Our team utilizes tools such as pH testing kits and reactive strips that change colour to detect potentially harmful substances in the water. Educating the community on these techniques is crucial; we empower families with knowledge to test for bacteria like E.coli, heavy metals, and chemical pollutants—threats that can be invisible but dangerous.
Villagers are frequently surprised to learn that water appearing clean may harbor dangers such as lead, arsenic, or nitrites. Even in regions distant from industrial locations, these pollutants can enter the water supply through natural soil composition, surface runoff, or local activities. We also stress the need for continuous vigilance: regular testing is essential since conditions can shift without warning.
“Water is meant to sustain life, not cause disease. By testing the water quality in East Sumba, we ensure that each sip contributes to a healthier future.”— Alex Wettstein, Founder and CEO of Fair Future
In the villages where we’ve constructed reliable wells, our water consistently tests safe. However, unexpected results can still occur. For example, sometimes a reading might show elevated pH levels, such as 10.2—an indication of alkaline water often perceived as healthful. These straightforward tests are lifesaving by preventing exposure to harmful substances before consuming water.
Our strategy strengthens communities by equipping them with the knowledge and resources to sustain water safety in the long run. This educational initiative promotes healthier choices, allowing families to safeguard themselves from diseases caused by contaminated water. Accessing clean water is life-changing, but maintaining its safety ensures a sustainable future for health and wellness. At Fair Future, we are committed to shaping a world where every drop of water satisfies thirst and enhances well-being.
