Wai Ma Hammu water reservoir improves rural health in Hambarita
A community-built ferrocement tank providing clean water for fifteen people
In Hambarita, the Fair Future Foundation and Kawan Baik Indonesia have taken important steps towards improving basic living conditions with the construction of Wai Ma Hammu. This 4,400-litre ferrocement reservoir now supplies clean water to fifteen people across three families. The name, which translates to The Best Water in Kambera, reflects the community’s dedication to ensuring health through reliable access to safe water. Before this initiative, families relied on stone pits called Kullup and occasionally received trucked water, which was often delayed or insufficient.
Building Community Empowerment
Wai Ma Hammu is located 28 km from Rumah Kambera, marking a milestone in community-led development. Local villagers undertook the labour-intensive task of transporting cement, sand, and steel across challenging terrain. Engineers from Fair Future carefully measured roof heights and catchment areas to ensure rainwater from three roofs was effectively directed into the reservoir. The project took over two weeks, involving nine builders and fifteen helpers, with brief pauses due to heavy rain and a family bereavement. Completing this vital structure on 8 June 2025, despite difficulties, shows remarkable resilience and determination.
Transformative Impact
Led by Loda Ana Amah and on land donated by Ndawa Kahindu, Wai Ma Hammu has become a crucial source of clean water, supporting drinking, hygiene, and cooking needs. This initiative exemplifies how the combination of science, community unity, and practical design can significantly change lives in East Sumba. The joint efforts of Fair Future and Kawan Baik Indonesia highlight the strength of grassroots projects in addressing urgent humanitarian issues, and their ongoing dedication to such initiatives promises further improvements in community health and well-being.
