In the remote village of Umalulu, we toured a school where nearly every child between the ages of 6 and 12 has already been infected with malaria—some on multiple occasions. The local yearly infection rate is over 50%, not as an anomaly but as a devastating norm. This was taken in SD Praiwangga School on 18.03.2025.
This statistic is not just alarming; it’s catastrophic. It highlights an ongoing crisis exacerbated by significant reductions in Indonesia’s health budget and the elimination of insurance coverage for essential medications, including those used to treat malaria and tuberculosis.
Beginning in May 2025, Fair Future will initiate a comprehensive regional epidemiological study. This research, conducted alongside medical teams and with community participation, seeks to uncover why malaria proliferates so aggressively here and identify the structural, environmental, and logistical factors that facilitate its spread. This study is founded by the RAM, Rotary Against Malaria.
The findings are scheduled for publication in July 2025 and will serve as a framework for developing targeted action plans in other affected regions.
Malaria in this region represents more than just a health issue; it constitutes a structural crisis. We must tackle this issue with seriousness, thorough research, and ongoing commitment.
