Fighting Malaria in Umalulu: A Critical Study for a Healthier Future
Understanding and Fighting Malaria in One of Indonesia’s Most Affected Regions
Hello, everyone. It’s Alex.
Malaria remains one of the most pressing health challenges in East Sumba, particularly in the remote area of Umalulu. Without access to electricity, clean water, or basic healthcare facilities, residents of Umalulu face alarming rates of malaria infections throughout the year. This study, funded by RAM, an international malaria control organization with CHF 5,000, aims to assess the severity of the situation and lay the foundations for an effective response.
Umalulu is one of the poorest and most remote areas in East Sumba. Access to the area is complex, requiring off-road vehicles or motorbikes to navigate its rugged terrain. The lack of reliable data on malaria prevalence makes a thorough field study even more crucial. Before launching a large-scale intervention, we need to understand the scale of the problem, the contributing factors, and the population’s immediate needs.
Our local and Swiss teams, which include local health workers, will collect vital information directly from affected communities. We will interview families, record infection rates, and identify high-risk areas where stagnant water breeds mosquitoes. We will assess access to treatment, preventative measures such as mosquito nets, and the effectiveness of current malaria awareness efforts by talking to villagers and health workers.
This study is about more than just collecting statistics; it is about listening, understanding, and creating a pathway to life-saving solutions. While we don’t have entomologists or sophisticated labs (but we will have one soon), we do have dedicated teams, local knowledge, and the trust of the local government and the communities we serve. With these assets, we will map the malaria crisis in Umalulu and propose concrete actions to combat the disease.Beyond data collection, we will also implement small but meaningful actions, such as distributing mosquito nets to vulnerable families and providing immediate medical support where possible. These short-term interventions will help alleviate some suffering while we plan a more comprehensive response.
This study is a critical first step in the fight against malaria in East Sumba. By working directly with the community and leveraging our experience on the ground, we aim to develop an effective and sustainable strategy. Malaria is preventable and treatable; we can make a difference with the right approach.
Research Schedule and Volunteer Involvement
This malaria study is scheduled to occur over a period of 2 to 4 weeks, commencing at the earliest opportunity. The final report will be submitted by the end of July 2025. We welcome everyone’s participation, particularly volunteers eager to assist with data collection and community engagement. If you’re interested in joining this vital health initiative, you can sign up here.
We invite our supporters to join us on this journey toward a malaria-free future in the eastern regions of Indonesia. Your support makes this mission possible, and together, we can bring innovative solutions and health to those who need it most.

Combating Malaria in East Sumba: An Urgent Endeavor. This gallery highlights the tireless work of Fair Future and Kawan Baik Indonesia to fight malaria in East Sumba, focusing especially on Umalulu, one of the most severely impacted areas.
From engaging with communities and conducting medical consultations to mapping high-risk areas and collecting field data, our teams strive to comprehend and mitigate malaria transmission.
Malaria is a constant presence in Umalulu, with cases occurring throughout the year. The area struggles with severe poverty, malnutrition, tuberculosis, and polio, which complicate public health initiatives even further. The absence of electricity and clean water combined with its remote location makes it one of the most challenging regions to access.
In response to this crisis, we have launched a large-scale research study to assess malaria prevalence, identify high-risk areas and formulate an effective response plan. Our teams will work alongside local health workers (Kawan Sehat) to conduct household surveys, map mosquito breeding sites and record living conditions to develop a detailed malaria control strategy.
Through this study, we will establish the foundation for future extensive malaria prevention initiatives in collaboration with Rotary International and its Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) division. The success of our research will shape future commitments to malaria control efforts in East Sumba.
This gallery offers a visual glimpse into our efforts—from field visits and data collection to engaging with local communities and training health agents. Each image captures our dedication to saving lives and preventing malaria from continuing its devastating impact on these remote areas.
Each effort is significant, and every piece of data holds value. This study plays a vital role in the battle against malaria in Umalulu.
