In Sumba, the sole public hospital serving nearly 800,000 people is completely out of supplies: no scissors, no forceps, no stethoscopes. Medical staff treat patients with the most basic tools, yet many conditions that could be cured go untreated, leading to preventable deaths. Staff are leaving because they cannot work under these conditions.
For weeks, we’ve consulted with doctors and nurses to identify their most urgent needs. Together, we compiled a list of essential equipment that could be purchased within a modest budget, totalling around 12,000 CHF – IDR 236,000,000.
We have bought everything on the list. The delivery is scheduled for mid-September. I will personally visit with local authorities to hand over the supplies to the hospital team.
While this won’t resolve all issues, it will provide the health workers with critical tools to save lives again. In a place where people are dying simply because there are no scissors, that effort truly matters.
