Polio resurgence in remote areas of Indonesia: an urgent call to action
In recent times, polio cases have increased dramatically in remote areas of Indonesia, mainly due to inadequate hygiene, poor sanitation standards and limited access to clean water. This highly infectious disease is caused by the poliovirus and targets the nervous system; it can lead to permanent paralysis within hours, most commonly affecting children under five years of age as we recently saw in Sumba Timur where all three children in a family were affected. The virus is spread through the faecal-oral route, particularly in areas with poor sanitation facilities and, as here, no sanitation.
As there is no cure for polio, prevention through vaccination and proper hygiene practices is crucial. Fair Future is working to raise awareness of the disease by improving sanitation facilities and ensuring access to clean water. Our teams are raising awareness among families about vaccination procedures to protect vulnerable communities from this preventable disease.
Immediate and coordinated actions are imperative to combat polio’s resurgence in these remote areas effectively.
