The Risks Associated with Overusing Antibiotics and Developing Resistance: Antibiotics play a crucial role in saving lives, yet their misuse and overuse can lead to significant and widespread repercussions. What occurs when these medications are not used appropriately? Using antibiotics unnecessarily or without proper medical supervision enables bacteria to adapt and develop resistance. This resistance renders common infections challenging—or even impossible—to treat, jeopardizing our capacity to manage diseases that were once easily curable.
Antibiotic resistance poses a global health crisis extending far beyond individual cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers it one of the most critical threats to public health worldwide. Due to resistance, infections like pneumonia, tuberculosis, and gonorrhoea are increasingly difficult to treat, resulting in higher mortality rates, prolonged hospitalizations, and substantial economic costs.
