Extract and Description of this News: Look at what has been done in the last 20 months, it's simply extraordinary because doing this in this region was a priori impossible, but we did it. We are at the end of the line in the Water Connections project, we have "only" a few things left to build, including a huge 25,000-liter tank. Here is the project map for you, so you can see all that has been done in this ultra-rural region, one of the poorest in Southeast Asia. - Thank you for your interest.

Where are we with the Water Connections project? What still needs to be done so that everyone has access to clean and healthy water?

This interactive map of the Water Connections project, Mbinudita site, by the Fair Future and Kawan Baik foundations, is for all of us on construction sites, an essential tool that we update as regularly as possible.

In 2015, 4.5 billion people did not have access to a safe water source (faeces are not well treated). In addition, 2.3 billion people were unable to benefit from basic sanitation. Here in East Sumba, 60% of families do not have access to water, and 95% of families do not have access to safe and clean water (we are not talking about drinking water).

As part of the sustainability goals that Fair Future has set itself, which include access to safe drinking water and sanitation solutions – we call this vital program “Water Connections” – we are changing this in a significant way and reducing this percentage.

In 100% of the villages and regions where we work, the scarcity of drinking water is a significant problem that affects all families, creates diseases, increases infant mortality, and creates poverty at all levels. The growing drought linked to climate change and desertification worsens these trends yearly; it is a fact observed.

For more than two years, Fair Future and Kawan Baik have worked to provide equitable access to clean and safe water and to provide sanitation facilities, toilets, showers and promote hygiene for all. Levels in ultra-rural areas of eastern Indonesia.

Here in East Sumba, 60% of families do not have access to water, and 95% of families do not have access to safe and clean water.

This Google map we update regularly shows you all that we have already done in the #mbinudita #rebuildmbinudita region. There are more than forty toilets, more than thirty tanks between 3,500 and 25,000 litres, three deep boreholes, more than fifteen kilometres of HDPE pipes that we have buried, and thousands of fittings and taps. This is to provide access to clean water and toilets to more than 250 families, nearly 2,800 people, more than 65% of whom are children under 12.

Testimony and speaking out

Our proximity to communities and families in distress implies a duty to raise awareness to improve their living conditions or their situation.

The Fair Future or Kawan Baik teams may witness violence, injustice, and deliberate acts and must testify.

Testimony is the act of becoming aware, in private or public, of what we see or have seen happening in front of us and by documenting these acts, we report.

Sometimes Fair Future speaks out publicly to highlight a crisis, expose abuses, challenge the diversion of aid, or speak out against policies that restrict access to health care, education, food and all other forms of social protection.

Supply and logistics

Fair Future already helps thousands of families every year but we are struggling!

However, one of our main problems is that we don’t have enough equipment and not enough medicine when we should always have enough material for the work to be done and for the patients to be treated.

In particular for the response to emergencies or in the event of natural disasters, when supplies must be needed within 24 hours.

But also for long-term programs, where a regular supply of equipment and drugs is essential. Fair Future and its teams cannot respond to and deal with all requests due to a lack of resources.

Minimization of risks for everyone

The actions carried out on the ground by the Fair Future and Kawan Baik teams are based solely on needs, regardless of political, economic or other interests.

On the ground but also everywhere else, our teams communicate and dialogue on a daily basis with communities, village authorities and regional governments, to facilitate access and supply to medical care, clean water, and food sufficient for the inhabitants of villages and rural communities.

Fair Future and Kawan Baik do everything possible to minimize the risks for our teams and the villagers to provide them with what they need.

The Fair Future teams

“You never know when it will happen, but it will happen again.”

When a health or social crisis affects one of the regions in which we are already, the Kawan Baik (good friends) of Fair Future who are present will mobilize to assist.

Fair Future, as it often does, can mobilize personnel from the region with whom we often work, including a group of over one hundred volunteers. Specialists can also be sent on-site from one of its logistics bases in Denpasar or Waingapu. Our teams include medical personnel, logisticians, water specialists, and project managers.



Water Connections project in Laindatang Village

This village currently lacks access to water, resulting in widespread illness and malnutrition. Both children and adults are underweight and have insufficient access to food and water.

It is imperative that we take action to provide hundreds of people with access to clean water. The prevalence of diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and infectious diarrhoea linked to contaminated water sources has taken a significant toll in this region. With the feasibility studies completed, we are ready to work.

This "Picture of the Day" shows you one of the classes of brave women (and two or three men) who learn with our teams how to give first aid – Primary Medical Care which is the most important – to a person or a sick or injured child.

These first days of medical training welcomed around sixty participants from the most isolated and rural villages. To give you an idea, folks, none of these villages has access to clean or safe water, and only a few have access to some electricity. There is often no road leading there, but only paths that are often impassable. And, of course, no medical centre or health centre near the villages.

The participants are 95% women, and all are teachers in the school of their ultra-rural region. What they have been doing for a few months now is remarkable. They heal and undoubtedly save lives, see here some images taken with their mobile phone.

Aside from being most undoubtedly unique in the world, the magic of this "primary medical care" program is that it works. The first batch of about 60 teachers who have undergone training in rural primary medical care are now gaining more and more confidence, and hundreds of urgent medical care are being provided to the children of sick or injured adults. Lives are being saved.

In a few days, Fair Future Foundation with Kawan Baik Indonesia will evaluate this program directly from the villages, in the company of those who are its heroes, all these extraordinary women.
